Tech Ready for Red Raider Invitational
January 21, 2021 | Track and Field
Red Raiders look to build upon momentum in season’s second meet.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech track & field will host its second meet of the season Saturday. Dubbed the Red Raider Invitational, the meet will provide an opportunity for the squad to build off the excitement created from a season opener at which four Red Raiders took world leads in their respective events and three school records fell.
As head coach Wes Kittley stated prior to the Corky Classic, each meet will present better and better competition for the Red Raiders to go against on their home track. Saturday's visitors will include Power-5 visitors Oklahoma and Miami (FL), as well as other Division I competition with the likes of North Texas, Texas State, UT-Arlington and Incarnate Word. Junior college powerhouse Barton CC will also be in attendance.
Saturday will also mark the Red Raider debuts for a pair of exciting new arrivals. Horizontal jumper Jalen Seals, a grad transfer from Baylor, will begin his Tech career Saturday in the long jump. Middle distance get Marco Vilca, a Peruvian runner who specializes in the 800m, will begin his collegiate career in the 600y before transitioning up to this main event as the season progresses. Kittley's middle distance group will also see the season debut of All-American Sven Cepus, who will get his individual debut in the 600y after rabbiting Takieddine Hedeilli to the world lead in the 800m last weekend.
In the field, Gabe Oladipo will again throw the weight and shot put one week removed from breaking his own school record in the former. Returning All-American pole vaulter Chloe Wall will continue her campaign as well. Jequan Hogan, another All-American, will compete in his first long jump since qualifying for the event at the NCAA Championships last season. He will also high jump.
Tech will have a handful athletes who exhausted their indoor eligibility last season competing unattached. Chelsey Cole will once again long and triple jump, while former All-American sprinters Sara Limp and Derrius Rodgers will run the 60m.
The Red Raider Invitational will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. The meet will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ here.
Attendance Information
For all indoor meets, the Sports Performance Center will operate at 25 percent capacity for an all-inclusive 750 people. This will include competing student-athletes, officials, coaches and meet personnel. Factoring in entries and relevant meet staff, no tickets will be available for sale to the general public for Saturday's Red Raider Invitational. Pass list guests will be permitted for competing Texas Tech student-athletes only.
General ticket releases will be evaluated on a week-by-week basis as meet participant numbers are finalized, meaning ticket sale availability will fluctuate each meet based on the total number of student-athlete participants, coaches, officials, volunteers and pass list quantities.
