The Red Raiders defeated the Cyclones in four sets, 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech volleyball team (12-7, 2-4) earned its first home conference win of the season, taking down Iowa State (12-5, 4-2) in four sets Friday night at United Supermarkets Arena.
The Red Raiders tallied a season-high 15 blocks, led by Karrington Jones and Kenna Sauer with six. Sauer posted her second straight 20 kill match and came within one dig of a double-double. Reagan Cooper finished with eight kills and freshman Madison Gilliland tied her career-high in kills with seven. Alex Kirby collected her seventh double-double of the season with 30 assists and a team-leading 14 digs.
Tech opened the first set with a 4-0 run that forced the Cyclones to use their first timeout. The Red Raiders made it 8-3 with an ace from Gilliland, her first of the season. Iowa State cut the deficit to three, 17-14, with an 8-3 run. Maddie O'Brien put the Red Raiders back up by five with an ace to make it 20-15, as Iowa State took their second timeout. Out of the timeout the Cyclones used a 5-2 run to pull within a couple of points, but the Red Raiders were able to hold them off for a 25-23 set one win.
A back-and-forth second set went in favor of the Red Raiders, giving Tech a 2-0 lead in the match. Iowa State used a timeout after an ace from Alex Torres gave Tech a two-point advantage, 20-18. The Cyclones tallied the next four points to go ahead by two, but Tech answered with the three straight points off two kills and a block assist from Sauer to make it 23-22. KJ Adams delivered an ace on the next point to create set point and a kill from Sauer gave the Red Raiders the set, 25-23.
Iowa State kept themselves alive in the match winning the third set 25-21. The Cyclones led by as much as 10, up 19-9, before Texas Tech went on a 9-0 run to pull within a point. Despite the Red Raiders rally, the Cyclones tallied six of the final nine points to force a fourth set.
The Red Raiders started the fourth set off slow, calling a timeout down five points at 15-10. Tech went on a 6-1 run out of the timeout, tying the match at 16 with back-to-back aces from Maddie Correa. The Cyclones would regain the lead, 19-16, with three straight points, but Tech answered the challenge, winning nine of the final 12 points to take the fourth set and the match.
Tech posted its worst offensive match of the season, hitting .098 with 30 errors in the win. Iowa State also struggled offensively, hitting .119 with 34 errors. The Red Raiders service game was strong, with eight aces in the match, three from Correa, two from Adams and one apiece from Torres, Gilliland and O'Brien.
