April 03, 2021 | Softball
Texas Tech dropped game three of the series 2-1 to fall to 0-6 in Big 12 play.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Tech (16-16, 0-6 Big 12) held seventh-ranked Texas (27-3, 3-0 Big 12) scoreless for four innings before falling to the Longhorns 2-1 in the series finale Saturday afternoon in Austin.
Missy Zoch (7-7) and Shea O'Leary (7-0) battled in a pitchers' duel rematch of game one, allowing just five hits apiece in the game.
The Red Raiders led for four innings after scoring in the top of the first on an RBI groundout from Karli Hamilton. Yvonne Whaley singled to lead off the game and advanced to third on an errant throw as Heaven Burton drew a walk. With two runners in scoring position and no outs, Hamilton hit a hard chopper to third base that brought home Whaley for the first run of the game. The Red Raiders would leave Burton stranded on third to end the inning and take the 1-0 advantage.
Zoch kept the Longhorns at bay through four innings, allowing just two base runners while striking out three.
Texas jumped in front in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back singles to lead off the inning put runners on the corners with no outs. A one-out double down the third base line from Courtney Day plated two runs to give Texas the 2-1 lead.
The Red Raiders had a chance to answer in the top of the sixth as Peyton Blythe reached on a two-out infield single, but Tech was unable to drive her in to tie the game.
Another three up, three down, inning from Zoch in the sixth gave Tech one last chance to extend the game in the top of the seventh.
Alanna Barraza singled up the middle to put the tying run on base for the Red Raiders with two outs, but O'Leary ended the game with her 11th strikeout to give Texas the series sweep.
Zoch tallied four strikeouts in the contest and did not give up any free passes while allowing two runs, both earned, on five hits.
O'Leary struck out 11 Red Raiders, walking one batter and allowing one run, unearned, on five hits.
