Texas Tech tees off its second event of the season Monday morning at the Mercedes Benz Invitational
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 20 Texas Tech women's golf team, fresh off a runner-up finish to start its season this past week, will continue its fall slate beginning Monday when the Red Raiders tee off at the Mercedes Benz Invitational hosted by the University of Tennessee.
Â
The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, giving the Red Raiders a new venue and several new opponents early in the season after facing a mostly regional field a week ago at the Sam Golden Invitational in Denton.
Â
The Red Raiders wrapped its stay in DFW in second place after recording the lowest 54-hole score in school history. Texas Tech was a combined 28-under-par 841 over the two-day tournament to finish as the runner-up to an Oklahoma State program that is currently No. 3 in the latest Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) poll.
Â
The performance moved the Red Raiders to No. 20 in the WGCA poll as Texas Tech will be the highest-ranked team in this week's field that also includes NCAA Regional regulars such as Virginia Tech, Kent State and Miami. Tech will be the only Big 12 program in the 17-team field.
Â
Tech head coach JoJo Robertson will send the same lineup to Tennessee as she used last week in DFW, which was highlighted by the debut of Chiara Horder. The freshman recorded two bogey-free rounds en route to finishing 10-under for the tournament and in a tie for fifth overall.
Â
She was one of three Red Raiders among the top-20 individuals, joining both Gala Dumez and Amy Taylor who were in a tie for 20th overall. Anna Dong and fellow freshman Chelsea Romas will round out the lineup for the Red Raiders this week.
Â
The Red Raiders will play 36 holes Monday, beginning with a 7:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. Live coverage will be provided throughout the event at www.Golfstat.com.
