Iowa State answered back with a 4-0 run, but Tech would score three-straight points on ISU errors and a block from Kanas and Rhodes for an 8-7 lead. The Cyclones would score six of the next nine points to take a 15-13 lead heading into the media timeout. The Red Raiders then tied things up at 16-16 when Kanas put down a kill then added a block. Iowa State responded with a 4-0 run, though, to lead 20-16. Tech battled back, getting within three on slams from Sauer and Jones, but Iowa State would win the first set, 25-21.

The Red Raiders took another early lead after going up 4-2 on an ace from Rhodes, a triple block and a kill from Cooper. An ace from Iowa State gave the Cyclones a lead, but that was short-lived when the Red Raiders went on a 4-1 run for an 8-6 advantage. The Red Raiders would take a 13-11 lead on a solo block from O'Brien, but then the Cyclones answered with a 4-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead, 15-13. Tech battled back and eventually won four consecutive points thanks to blocks from Sauer, Kanas and Rhodes to lead, 18-16.
