After dropping the doubles point, Texas Tech swept singles action
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis program downed No. 28 Tulsa, 4-1 Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
After dropping the doubles point, Texas Tech (8-5) swept all four singles matches that were completed.
Junior Dimitrios Azoidis got the Red Raiders on the board, when he rolled to a one and four victory on court four. Azoidis won the first five games of the opening set and was not broken in the match.
Tech quickly regained the lead when Reed Collier defeated No. 99 Ezequiel Santalla of Tulsa (7-5), 6-4/6-1. Collier broke in the 10th and final game of the opening set before cruising to the 6-1 victory in the second.
Olle Wallin continued his strong weekend, rolling to a three and two victory on court three.
Needing just one more point to seal the deal, Tech turned to freshman Piotr Pawlak.
Pawlak shook off dropping the opening set (6-0) to win an epic three-setter on court three. The victory sealed Texas Tech's third consecutive victory.
REED COLLIER:
"We didn't get off to the start we wanted to in doubles play, so I just tried to come out in singles play with good energy. I tried to focus on holding my serve and playing solid tennis. I think I did a good job of doing that. I'm glad I was able to contribute to the team."
ISAAC AREVALO:
"Today was a great result for us. We had a little rough stretch a couple of weeks ago, but we're starting to play much better. We played a really good team today and found a way to win the match despite losing the doubles point. So that was really good for us. Everyone kept their energy up which is key. The key to winning matches is keeping our energy level high. We only dropped one set which is impressive by our guys. I think yesterday was a new start for us and we're just going to keep building on this. It was a great result for the team."
UP NEXT:
Tech continues its four match homestand next weekend when they welcome Wichita State and UTSA to the McLeod Tennis Center. First serve against Wichita State Saturday is set for 11 a.m.
