Tech swept the Shockers to win fourth straight
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team won their fourth straight match, sweeping Wichita State on Saturday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center 4-0.
The 36th-ranked Red Raiders (9-5) were led by Dimitrios Azoidis and Isaac Arevalo. Both Azoidis and Arevalo won in singles and doubles.
The doubles point began with Azoidis and his partner Reed Collier winning 6-3. The doubles point was up for grabs after Wichita State (7-6) won on court three 6-4, but Arevalo and freshman Piotr Pawlak finished the job with a 7-5 victory.
In singles action, Azoidis helped set the tone, cruising to a 6-2, 6-3 victory to give Tech at 2-0 lead. On court one, Arevalo added another point for the Red Raiders, when he defeated Wichita State's Nicolas Acevedo 6-1, 7-5.
With just one point to go Tech turned to Ilgiz Valiev. In his first action since Feb. 6, Valiev finished the job for his team winning an opening-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (1) before winning the second set 6-4.
HEAD COACH DANNY WHITEHEAD:
"This team is really improving. We've talked a lot about creating an atmosphere when we start the match, and I think we did a good job of that today. We've also talked about getting tougher in the middle of matches and as the season goes on, and we also did a good job of accomplishing that today. There's moments during matches and in the middle of points where we take our foot of the gas a little bit and that's what we need to get better at. We need to continue to try and extend the length of time we put pressure on our opponent. I think we're doing a good job of that but we can continue to get better in that area."
ON VALIEV'S RETURN TO ACTION:
"I was really happy with what [Ilgiz] did. He competed well overall despite starting slow, but he hasn't played in a few weeks. I was happy to see him back on the court and playing well. When he plays well he has great energy."
