Texas Tech came back from a three-stroke deficit to claim its second tournament title of the season Sunday in Arizona
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 23 Texas Tech won its second tournament in as many weeks Sunday as the Red Raiders rallied from three strokes down to start the final round to claim the Mountain View Collegiate title held in Tucson, Arizona.
The team championship marks the second of the season for the Red Raiders, who took down a pair of top-10 teams over the final 18 holes in No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 7 San Jose State. In all, Texas Tech defeated five schools currently ranked in the top 25 of the latest Golfweek poll en route to securing its 17th team title under head coach JoJo Robertson.
The Red Raiders edged San Jose State by a single stroke after combining for a 4-under-par 284 final round. San Jose State was even-par over the final 18 holes, while Oklahoma State struggled at 5-over to drop to 17-under for the tournament, eight strokes back of the Red Raiders in third place.
In the process of repeating as tournament champions, the Red Raiders also snapped the school's 54-hole scoring record after finishing at 25-under 839 over the three rounds. Texas Tech was under par in all three rounds en route to snapping the mark for the second time already this year after the Red Raiders previously compiled an 841 final card at the Sam Golden Invitational to start the season.
Balance continued to be a central theme for Robertson's squad as four different Red Raiders finished at par or better over the final 18 holes with freshman Chiara Horder leading the lineup at 2-under 70. Anna Dong and Gala Dumez were a stroke back of Horder at 1-under, while Amy Taylor rounded out Texas Tech's counting scores at even-par.
On the individual leaderboard, the strong final round pushed Dumez into a tie for third overall at 8-under, marking her team-leading fifth time in the top 10 this season and the fourth time among the top-five individuals. The trio of Horder, Dong and Taylor all closed the event at 4-under for the tournament, finishing in a tie for 15th, respectively.
Texas Tech also received a 5-over round from Libby Fleming to round out its lineup. Fleming, who started the event with a 3-under card, was one of three freshmen in the field for the Red Raiders, who also had Kylee Loewe playing as an individual. Loewe closed the event in a tie for 38th at 6-over, two strokes in front of Fleming in a tie for 44th overall.
This is the third Mountain View Collegiate title for the Red Raiders in school history as Texas Tech now has the most tournament wins in event history. Texas Tech, which also won the event outright in both 2012 and 2013, also recorded the second-lowest 54-hole score in tournament history, trailing only the 836 Iowa State signed for in 2019.
The Mountain View Collegiate was the second-to-last stroke play event for the Red Raiders before the Big 12 Championships in late April. Texas Tech will return to Lubbock to host its own match play event April 3-4 before traveling to the Texas-Oklahoma border for The Bruzzy hosted in Thackerville, Oklahoma.
The Red Raider match play event will be open to all fans at The Rawls Course where Texas Tech will host Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Tulsa over the two-day tournament.
