AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Tech track and field team wrapped up Friday's portion of the 94th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by Truist, highlighted by Malik Metivier winning the 400 hurdles title.
Metivier was staring down the heavy favorite from Baylor, Nathaniel Ezekiel, who recorded the world leading time of 49.14 last night in the prelims. Unfazed, Mativier matched side-by-side with him after the last set of hurdles and pulled away in the final few meters for the win, clocking in at 49.15 – a new PR and the No. 2 time in the world.
Meanwhile, the women's 4x100 relay team started the day off recording the second-fastest time in school history. The team of Virginia Kerley, K. Dubarry-Gay, Demisha Roswell and Chukwuma etched a time of 43.62 to secure a spot in tomorrow's final. Overall, it placed second behind Texas' time of 42.42. It's the first time since 2012 that a Red Raider's 4x100 team jumps inside the top 3 list – the school record is 43.53, set back in 2012.
After running the third leg of the 4x100, Roswell went over to the 100 hurdles and posted a PR time of 13.01 in the first round as it was the fourth-best time overall. That mark placed her fifth all-time on Tech's top 10 list. Meanwhile, Jacolby Shelton made his 2022 outdoor debut running in the 100. He posted an opening time of 10.24 – just .03 seconds off his PR – qualifying seventh overall for Saturday's final.
A final notable finish came in the triple jump by Chris Welch. He leaped onto the scene and atop the NCAA leaderboard in the section "A" of the event going 16.25m (53-3.75) – two centimeters off his PR.
