Red Raiders head to Waco for Big 12 opener

LUBBOCK, Texas – After picking up the team's second top-25 win of the season last Sunday, the No. 31 Texas Tech Red Raiders travel to Waco to open conference play against the No. 47 Baylor Bears on Saturday, April 1 at 6 p.m.
Last week, Texas Tech posted an exciting, 4-2, victory against the no. 24 Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. In the match, MTSU took an early lead after winning the doubles point. They also added another win in singles, but the Red Raiders would collect singles victories from Olle Wallin, Franco Ribero, Lorenzo Esquici and Dimitrios Azoidis to clinch the win.
Esquici leads the team with 13 dual singles wins, while Wallin and Ribero follow with 10 dual wins apiece. In doubles, the duo of Ribero and Piotr Pawlak have a team-best 10 wins, with eight of those coming at the two position. In the recent ITA rankings, Wallin moved up 81 spots to No. 42 in singles, while Azoidis and Reed Collier are at No. 72 in doubles.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The No. 47 Baylor Bears come into the match with a 12-11 record and are also opening their conference season against the Red Raiders. Some of their wins include Arizona State, Florida State, ACU, Furman and Tulsa. Their losses come at the hands of Wake Forest, Illinois, Florida, South Carolina, TCU and Ohio State. Earlier in February, the Bears qualified for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships after winning the Waco Regional. Baylor's leaders in dual singles wins are Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi and Zsombor Velcz as they total 12 each. In doubles, the team of Tadeas Paroulek and Velcz tally a team-leading 16 dual wins with nine at the one spot and seven at court two. In singles, Jake Finn Bass is ranked No. 41 while Paroulek sits at No. 94. The Bears also have two teams ranked in the top-15 of doubles as Paroulek/Velcz are No. 11 and Bass/Mazzuchi check in at No. 12.
