April 01, 2023 | Men's Tennis
WACO, Texas – Franco Ribero and Piotr Pawlak picked up a ranked win against the nation's No. 12 doubles team, but the No. 31 Texas Tech Red Raiders dropped a heartbreaker to the No. 47 Baylor Bears on Saturday night at the Hurd Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (12-7, 0-1 Big 12) got things started by taking the doubles point from the Bears (record), the team's 12th of the year. At the top court, a battle was going on between No. 72 Dimitrios Azoidis/Reed Collier and No. 11 Tadeas Paroulek/Zsombor Velcz. The Bear duo would win it by a 6-4 score for the slight advantage.
However, courts two and three finished almost simultaneously as the Red Raiders would prevail to lead 1-0. At court two, the tandem of Pawlak and Ribero posted their first ranked doubles win of the season when they defeated No. 12 Jake Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi by a 6-4 score. Immediately after this, Isaac Arevalo and Olle Wallin would clinch the doubles point after a commanding, 6-3 victory against Justin Braverman and Christopher Frantzen.
The Bears came back though, winning four singles matches to clinch the victory. They picked up their first win at court five after Ethan Muza beat Lorenze Esquici, 6-3, 6-4. Baylor's second point came at court three as Arevalo fell to Marko Miladinovic, 6-3, 6-1.
At court four, Collier dropped his match to Mazzuchi, 7-5, 6-3, and the Bears took a 3-1 lead. Then, Baylor clinched it with a win at court one when No. 94 Paroulek defeated No. 42 Wallin, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Azoidis was able to give Tech its second point of the match at court five after beating Luc Koenig. In the first set, Koenig took a 4-1 lead, but the Red Raider fought back to win six of the next eight games to force the tiebreaker. In the breaker, Azoidis only allowed one point to win the Red Raiders' only first set of the night. In set two, Koenig again went out to a 4-2 lead before Azoidis rallied back to win it by a 7-5 score to make it 4-2, Baylor.
The last match of the contest happened at court two as Ribero was facing Velcz. The Bear was able to win the first set, 6-2, before Ribero forced a set three with a 6-4 second set. The final set went back-and-forth until Velcz pulled away with a 7-5 score.
Up next, the Red Raiders host the Texas Longhorns on Thursday, April 6 at 5 p.m. in Lubbock.
