Throws record first points for Tech Friday

Saturday marks the beginning of the first day of all running prelims
NORMAN, Okla.– The Texas Tech track and field team capped off day one of the 2023 Big 12 Outdoor Championships at John Jacobs Field Friday evening.
In the final event of the evening, the men's javelin throw, Garrett Wade became Tech's highest finisher of the day placing 3rd. His heave of 64.86m (212-9) came on his fifth throw. He added six points on the board for the Red Raiders. It's the second-straight season Wade finishes 3rd at the Big 12 meet.
Matthew Maki started day one for the Red Raiders at 7:45 am running in the 10k. The grad transfer finished with a time of 32:15.35.
Isabel Velasco placed 15th in the women's javelin throwing 34.19m (112-2).

Joe Keys and Cole Omlin completed their first day of the decathlon. Keys ended his day with a PB in the 400m running a time of 49.74 to bump his day one total to 3,873 points as he sits 7th overall. Meanwhile, Omlin also ran a PB in the 400m to complete his first day with a time of 51.16.
