Gators force winner-take-all regional final
June 04, 2023 | Baseball
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Texas Tech fell 7-1 Sunday night to No. 2 Florida at Condron Ballpark, setting up a winner-take-all Regional Championship at 11 a.m. CT on Monday for the right to face South Carolina in the Super Regional round. The Gators rallied for four in the top of the sixth, all scored with two outs; the difference maker to stave off elimination.
"You're right where you want to be," said head coach Tim Tadlock. "This is an opportunity you want and obviously you had the opportunity today too to win the Regional, but it is a baseball game. If you would've signed up for one baseball game to move onto the next round at the start of the year, I think we would all take that."
Tech plated its solo run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth, as the designated home team Sunday night, while the Gators tacked on three more in a ninth inning that saw four of the Red Raiders' eight walks issued.
Zane Petty gave the Red Raiders an immaculate start, holding firm in a 0-0 pitcher's duel through the first five innings. The true freshman allowed one earned run and three hits, he walked one batter and also struck out one.
The Red Raiders had a couple of opportunities to provide Petty run support in the second and fifth innings, having runners on second and third with two outs in the second, while Gavin Kash hit a leadoff single in the fifth only for the next three batters to go down in order.
The tables turned in a wild sixth inning that had all of the game's momentum swing from the Red Raiders' side before swiftly shifting to the Gators' side during a two-out rally. Tech looked to be on pace to escape the frame after a pair of base hits kick off the inning that also signaled Petty's exit. On the ensuing at-bat, Tech recorded the most unlikely of double plays as a pair of runners attempted to cross home plate on what was a fielder's choice with the two baserunners trying to score. Florida answered the twin killing with three base hits to go along with three walks, an error and a wild pitch.
Drew Woodcox, in his 11th start this season and first start since May 6 versus Sam Houston, led the Red Raiders with two hits. He was the designated hitter. He owned two of Tech's seven hits as Florida matched the Red Raiders in the hits department but produced six more runs.
Florida benefited from eight walks and one hit batter to increase its traffic on the bases. Jase Lopez was charged with three earned runs and two walks in 2/3 innings of work in the sixth while Damian Bravo was charged with three earned runs and four walks in the ninth. Brendan Lysik gave Tech 2 1/3 innings in between Lopez and Bravo, did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out three.
Cade Fisher paced the Gators over seven innings in his second career start. He entered Sunday with one start back on Feb. 21 versus South Florida, tossing a season-long four innings in that game. He struck out six and issued zero walks on Sunday but did issue two free passes on hit batsmen. Florida's Brandon Neely pitched the final two innings, inheriting two runners on base and no outs in the eighth. He limited the damage to one run and earned his 12th save of the season.
