LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 17-ranked Kansas Jayhawks swept the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 26-24, 25-19, 25-14, on Saturday afternoon at the United Supermarkets Arena to split the conference series.
For Tech (8-6, 1-1 Big 12), both Brynn Williams and Kate Hansen led with seven kills apiece against Kansas (10-2, 1-1 Big 12), with Hansen earning a career-high in the category. Hansen also hit a team-best .467 with three blocks in the match.
Maddie Correa led the team in digs again after collecting 16 followed by Courtney O'Brien with nine of her own. In addition, Reese Rhodes totaled 18 assists and four kills on nine attacks (.444).
The first set was a grind from start to finish. Tech would take a 6-5 lead on a kill by Emily Merrick, then with the 7-6 advantage, the Red Raiders went on a 5-1 run to lead by four. Kansas came back to lead 15-14 on a 4-0 run. The teams then traded points until an attack error by the Jayhawks gave Tech the 23-22 advantage. However, Kansas closed out the set winning the final three points to take it, 26-24.
Kansas began the second set with a 6-3 lead until Tech got a few kills from Williams to get within one at 7-6. The Jayhawks remained ahead, eventually taking a 20-15 lead before a block from Caitlin Dugan and Hansen stopped the run. Tech went on a little run at the end of the set, but Kansas held on to claim it by a 25-19 score.
The Red Raiders turned it around in the start of set three after leading 5-2 on an ace from Hansen and errors on Kansas. The Jayhawks answered with a 4-0 run before a kill by Reagan Engler stopped the momentum. Kansas won seven of nine points for the 19-11 lead, then maintained it to sweep Tech, 25-14.
