Cherubet takes first at Gans Creek Classic

Juliet Cherubet and Anastasia Chepkorir led the way with a 1-2 finish
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Juliet Cherubet claimed the top individual finish pacing the Texas Tech women, while Vincent Koech led the men finishing second overall Friday morning at the Gans Creek Classic meet.

"It was a great effort by both teams," head cross country coach Jon Murray said. "This is a fantastic course and both groups handled the humidity well."

Cherubet, in only her second race of the season, crossed the end line with a 6k time of 20:16.40 to come away as the top individual placer. Meanwhile, Anastasia Chepkorir who was also running her second race of the year, was right behind Cherubet as she placed second overall with a time of 20:39.00.

Lily Mather was the third scorer for Tech as she finished 49th with a time of 22:17.90 (scored 47), Hannah Spears finished 67th (22:36.50, scored 63) with Taylor Limbaugh (22:38.40, scored 65) placing 69th, rounding out the scoring for 178 team points -fifth overall. Mather and Limbaugh each recorded personal best (PB) 6k times.

"Vincent and Gideon did a good job of being low scorers for the men," stated Murray. "It was an essential part of our team performance."

Isaac Hernandez (24:23.5) finished 11th, with Daniel Mendez (25:01.80) and Samuel Ashley (25:17.20, scored 48) placing 38th and 49th, respectively. The men totaled 102 points for a 3rd place team finish. Hernandez and Mendez each recorded PB times.

On the men's side, Koech and Gideon Kiplimo went 2-3 to pace the Red Raiders. In his 8k season debut, Koech recorded a time of 23:58.10 as Kiplimo was on his heels at 23:59.90.
