Tech takes on Sooners in Norman

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders are back on the road this weekend as they travel to Norman, Okla., to take on the Oklahoma Sooners this Saturday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. in the Lloyd Noble Center.
The Lady Raiders are coming off a tough defeat to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls this past Wednesday in Stillwater, 58-71. Sophomore Jasmine Shavers had yet another great game as she posted her second double-double of her career with a team-leading 17 points and 10 boards. Sophomore Bailey Maupin was right behind as she totaled 16 points and six rebounds in the game.
As a team, Texas Tech is averaging 71.1 points per game on 41.9 percent shooting, while holding its opponents to just 58.6 points per game, which is good for 71st in the NCAA. In addition, the Lady Raiders are forcing on average 21.18 turnovers per game which is ranked 23rd in the country. Tech is first in the conference and 50th in the nation in free throw percentage (.759), while ranking 22nd in the country with 15.53 free throws made per game. Maupin also knows how to get to the free throw line as she sits at fourth in the NCAA with 84 free throws made.
The Lady Raiders are led by both Maupin and Shavers in scoring as they average 15.4 and 15.3 points per game, respectively. Sophomore Kilah Freelon is third on the team with 8.6 points per game, followed by senior Jordyn Merritt with 7.1. Freelon boasts a team-best 5.7 rebounds per game, followed by Shavers with 5.6 and Merritt with 5.2. Maupin leads the Lady Raiders with 65 assists while both her and Shavers also lead with 27 steals.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Oklahoma Sooners are coming into the game with a 9-6 overall record and 3-1 record in conference play. Some key wins have come against No. 12 Ole Miss (80-70), Virginia (82-67), UCF (69-52), BYU (75-63) and Cincinnati (77-64). The Sooners have lost to Princeton (63-77), No. 19 Tennessee (73-76), UNVL (76-92), No. 24 North Carolina (52-61) and Kansas State (57-74). As a team, the Sooners are ranked ninth in the country with 46.33 rebounds per game and 14th in the nation with 19.3 assists per game. The Sooners are averaging 77.6 points per game while holding opponents to 68.8 points per game. There are currently four Sooners who average double-figure scoring so far this year – Skylar Vann (13.9), Aubrey Joens (10.9), Payton Verhulst (10.7) and Sahara Williams (10.6). Vann also leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per game followed by Williams with 5.9 and Verhulst with 5.8.
