Texas Tech hosts No. 10 Texas on Wednesday

LUBBOCK, Texas – After opening Big 12 play with a road win against Houston, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders are set to host their first conference home game of the year as the No. 10-ranked Texas Longhorns come to town for a game on Wednesday, January 3 at 6 p.m. in the United Supermarkets Arena.
The Lady Raiders (12-2, 1-0 Big 12) opened conference play with a 79-71 victory at Houston last week. Four Lady Raiders were in double-figures with Jada Wynn leading the way after scoring a career-high 23 points on six field goals, all of which were 3-pointers. Bailey Maupin was right behind with 19 points, followed by Kilah Freelon and Jasmine Shavers with 10 apiece. Jordyn Merritt and Shavers led the way with six rebounds each and Ashley Chevalier added a team-best four assists.
As a team, Texas Tech is averaging 73.6 points per game while holding opponents to 56.3 points per game on .387 shooting. The Lady Raiders are shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from behind the arc, while averaging a .747 free throw percentage. At the free throw line, the Lady Raiders are ranked 31st in the nation and fourth in the Big 12 in free throw attempts per game (21.43) and are also ranked 21st nationally and third in conference with 16.00 free throws made per game. In addition, Maupin checks in at 11th nationally and first in the Big 12 with 67 free throws made.
Tech is good at forcing turnovers as the team is ranked 21st in the country and fourth in conference with 21.72 turnovers forced per game, while their three-point percentage defense (.260) is ranked 35th nationally. The Lady Raiders have forced 20 or more turnovers in 10 games so far, and more than 30 turnovers twice in just 14 games. Individually, Maupin leads the Lady Raiders with 15.6 points per game, followed by Shavers with 14.9 and Kilah Freelon with 9.9. On the rebounding side, Freelon leads with 6.6 rebounds per game, while Merritt averages 5.4 and Shavers totals 5.3 per game.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The No. 10-ranked Texas Longhorns are 13-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference. They have key wins against Arizona State (84-42), No. 11 UConn (80-68) and Arizona (88-75), while dropping their most recent game on Dec. 30 to No. 11 Baylor, 79-85. As a team, the Horns have forced 341 turnovers while only committing 184, ranking atop the NCAA leaderboard in turnover margin. Texas also ranks second in the country with 52.1 percent shooting and fourth nationally with 92.0 points per game. The Longhorns have four players who average double-figures per game – Taylor Jones (16.2), Rori Harmon (14.1), Madison Booker (12.6) and Shaylee Gonzales (10.6). Jones also leads with 7.4 rebounds per game and 17 blocks. With Harmon being out for the season due to an ACL injury, Texas is without their second leading scorer and rebounder as well as their leader in assists.
