The Red Raiders overcame a West Virginia comeback to win in five sets for the second-straight game
MORGANTOWN, West Virginia – Brynn Williams second straight double-double helped stave off a Mountaineer's comeback on their home floor. The match was a true flip of the script as the Red Raiders dominated sets one and two before West Virginia answered back with equally dominating performances in sets three and four with Tech able to secure the final 15 points to win.
Texas Tech (11-10, 3-6) was again led by Williams who finished with 12 kills and 12 digs to go along with three blocks and an ace.
Mia Wesley finished with eight kills and a team-high 17 digs while Emily Merrick finished with nine kills and three timely blocks while hitting .471.
Aliyah McDonald and Reagan Leinen combined for nine kills, eight blocks and both hit over .230 out of the middle blocker position.
Maddie Correa held down the back line with 16 digs and two service aces. Lola Davila followed her career performance with another solid outing, going for nine digs and picking up two aces of her own.
Katelyn Cochran and Hanna Borer combined for 32 assists, Borer leading the way with 17 and adding four digs and an ace. Cochran added two kills and a career-high six blocks.
The Red Raiders held West Virginia (8-12, 2-7) to under .075 hitting each of the first two sets before the Mountaineers did the same to them in sets three and four. Tech swung away in set five, hitting .318 with eight kills on 22 attempts.
Despite the Mountaineers recording more kills, blocks and points than Tech, the Red Raiders were able to find timely points thanks to their performance at the service line and big plays from Williams, Merrick and Wesley.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Tech took the first two sets 25-16 and 25-15. They hit a solid .229 percent in set two while holding the Mountaineers to a .073 hitting percentage, forcing eight errors. The Red Raiders sided out 68 percent of the time in both sets while West Virginia was only able to side out 41 and 44 percent of the time.
The Mountaineers flipped the scores in set three and four winning 25-15 and 25-16 while hitting .290 and .275, respectively.
Set five had both teams putting their best efforts forth with 11 ties and seven lead changes but none bigger than a 13-13 tie that was broken by a huge Emily Merrick block. After a West Virginia timeout, Mia Wesley stepped up to the service line and delivered the match-clinching ace to send Tech back home with two victories from an impressive weekend.
