
Tech defeats Wildcats in Big 12 home opener

Red Raiders win in four thanks to dominating fourth set
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech volleyball team (9-6, 1-2) defeated Kansas State (3-9, 1-2) in four sets by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-15 with the Wildcats taking the third set 25-18. Mia Wesley recorded her fifth double-double of the season going for 14 kills and 19 digs to lead the way for the Red Raiders.
Brynn Williams had a great night as well, totaling 13 kills and three blocks to finish with a team-high 15.5 points. Katelyn Cochran and Hanna Borer combined for 35 assists with Borer leading the team with 19. Cochran added three kills and a block while Borer finished the match with two aces and seven digs.
Middles Aliyah McDonald and Reagan Leinen combined for 13 kills, six blocks and 20.5 points and only totaled one error on 32 attacks. Emily Merrick added six kills of her own and was in on two blocks to round out the major scorers for Tech.
Maddie Correa finished with 12 digs and Emily Contreras added nine digs of her own. The two were perfect on serve receive as well as they held down the backline.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Tech made its money on the back end of sets in this match. Besides the loss in the third set, Tech used big runs to secure the win.
First set was tied up 11 before Tech exploded for an 11-1 run thanks to service runs by Borer and Simone Overbeck. The Red Raiders maintained control of the set despite attempts by the Wildcats.
Tech was trailing 14-11 in set two before regaining the lead at 19-18. The Red Raiders went on a 6-3 run to close out the set and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
After a 7-7 tie in set three, K-State found its offense, going up 21-11. Tech outscored the Wildcats 7-4 late in the set, but was unable to overcome the deficit.
Set four was all Red Raiders as they stormed out to a 22-8 lead before K-State found any sort of offense. The Wildcats went on a 5-0 run, but it was too little too late as Tech put the clamps on and won the match.
