No. 19 Tech rolls past UTA, 13-1
February 20, 2024 | Baseball
The Red Raiders got four strong innings from Brady Trombello and two hits a piece from Gavin Kash, Kevin Bazzell and Austin Green
Â
In the victory, the Texas Tech (3-1) offense shined recording a season-best 13 runs on 13 hits, as every Red Raider starter reached base in the win.
Â
And while the offense certainly will steal the headlines, it was Tech's pitching that shined just as bright, as five relivers combined to allow just three hits and a run over the games final five innings. The Red Raiders retired the final 11 batters of the game, as the pen did not allow a hit over the final four innings.
Â
What started as a pitcher's duel earlier quickly flipped in the direction of the Red Raiders when Tech used a two-out walk, a pair of two out doubles to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The final two-base hit came off the bat of Kevin Bazzell who recorded his first two RBIs of the season in a 2-for-5 performance.
Â
The 2-0 lead lasted all of one batter, as Gavin Kash deposited an offering from UTAs (2-3) Tate Bethel 405' into the Mavs bullpen. The ball came off of Kash's bat at a blistering 106.4 MPH.
Â
Armed with a 4-0 lead, Trombello breezed through the third, retiring the side in order, before stranding a lead-off runner on third with three straight outs.
Â
In the fifth, the Red Raiders used a single by Gage Harrleson and a stolen base to set the table ofr Austin Green who ripped a two-bagger down the third base line. The double gave Tech a 5-0 lead .
Â
After UTA used three straight singles to pull to within 5-1, the Red Raiders used a lineout double play and a fielders choice to limit the damage to just a run.
Â
The Red Raiders used singles from Cade McGee and Owen Washburn followed by a fielders choice from Damian Bravo to take a 6-1 lead in the sixth.
Â
Tech used a lead off double from Bazzell to jump start a three-run seventh that pushed the advantage to 9-1 in favor of the visitors.
The Red Raiders used a two-RBI single from freshman TJ Pompey and a fielding error to plate the games final four runs.
Â
In the end, five different Red Raiders were able to make either their collegiate or Tech debut Tuesday, highlighted by three pitchers (Hudson Luce, Chandler Coe and Cole Kaase) seeing their first action.
Â
With the win, Tech improves to 3-1 on the young season, and will take a three-game winning streak into tomorrow's matinee showdown against No. 7 Oregon State.
HEAD COACH TIM TADLOCK:Â
"I'm really proud of Brady and it was fun to watch him pitch. He executed pitches on both sides of the plate and threw three different pitches for strikes and it was a lot of fun to watch him. It was good to get some of the younger guys in tonight, and even with a guy like Luce he hasn't thrown in a game in a while. He was out all year last year, but he came in a threw the ball really good. All the guys we saw tonight have a chance to help us down the road. It'll be a quick turnaround for us into Oregon State tomorrow but every time you get on the field it's an opportunity to compete and get better."
UP NEXT:
The Red Raiders and Beavers will clash Wednesday afternoon at Globe Life Field. First pitch is set for Noon.
