February 20, 2024 | Men's Tennis
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders fell to the UT Arlington Mavericks, 4-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks (5-4) struck first in doubles on court one where Dante Teramo and Joan Torres Espinosa were able to defeat Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak, 6-3. At court two, the Texas Tech (5-4) tandem of Olle Wallin and Lorenzo Esquici were able to hold the UT Arlington pairing of Yazid Lahjomri and Meethre Barot to a 5-5 tie late into the set. Then on court three, Tech's Jonas Gundacker and Takeyasu Sekiguchi were able to do the same against the Mavericks duo of Pedro Sasso and Andres Medus holding them to a 5-5 tie. Despite the strong effort from both pairs, court two was unable to hold on and dropped the match, 7-5, as UT Arlington won the doubles point.
On the singles front, court five was tight early on with Pawlak taking on an early 3-2 lead over Medus. The Maverick overcame the early deficit, though, and gave UTA its second point of the contest, 6-3, 6-0. On court six, Abboud came out quick, shooting off to a 3-1 lead in the first set before UT-Arlington's Lahjomri won three of the next five games. Abboud would be able to overcome this effort to win the first set, 6-4. Abboud was behind for most of the second set before he came back to force a tiebreaker. Abboud then bested Lahjomri to win the match for Tech and put their first point on the board, 6-4, 7-6 (7).
On court three, Gundacker started off with an early 2-1 lead in the first set, before going down 3-4 to Barot. Gundacker battled back and won the next three games to earn himself the 6-3 advantage. UT-Arlington's Barot would be able to create some momentum for himself by winning four of the next five games to put Gundacker in a 2-4 hole in the set. Gundacker would fight back to win two of the next three to dampen the deficit to 4-5. However, the Maverick would eventually force a third set by way of a 7-5 victory over Gundacker.
Court one was a battle throughout. Wallin and Torres Espinosa traded blows early on that led to a 3-3 tie in the first set, but the Red Raider would eventually lose it, 6-4. The second set saw a back-and-forth start with a 4-4 tie. Then, Wallin showed his stuff by breaking a serve and winning set two, 7-5, to force a third. In the final set, Torres Espinosa was able to prevail after winning by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, to clinch the match by a 4-1 score.
Up next, the Texas Tech Red Raiders play in Lincoln, Neb., on Friday, February 23 at 6 p.m. against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
