February 08, 2024 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders are prepped for another busy weekend as they welcome the UTRGV Vaqueros and the UTSA Roadrunners to Lubbock. Tech will open with a doubleheader against UTRGV on Friday, February 9 at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center, then will welcome UTSA on Sunday, February 11 at 11 a.m. at The Falls Tennis & Athletic Club.
The Red Raiders look to bounce back after ITA Kickoff Weekend in Los Angeles where they took back-to-back losses to San Diego and SMU. Against the Mustangs, Texas Tech captured the doubles point with a clinch on court two by Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak. The duo held serve at 5-all against SMU's Callaway Clark and Eric Hadigian, then went on to win 7-5. Abboud and Pawlak are 3-0 to start the year.
Reed Collier and Jonas Gundacker were the other pairing to win against the Mustangs, as they defeated SMU's Adam Neff and Trevor Svajda, 6-4. They're 3-2 to start the season and back in the win column after dropping their previous two matches.
Collier, who is now boasting a career-high singles ranking of No. 55, looks to continue his incredible singles start in 2024. Against San Diego's No. 31 Iiro Vasa, Collier handily won, 6-3, 6-0. He is 5-0 overall, 2-0 against ranked opponents, and before his win against SMU's No. 88 Adam Neff, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3, he had not played in a third set.
No. 80 Olle Wallin has also started the year well. In a tight battle against San Diego's No. 8 Oliver Tarvet, Wallin split the first two sets 7-3 (3), 2-6, before the match went unfinished. In his last contest, Wallin took care of SMU's Svajda, winning 6-4 in straight sets. Down 3-1 in the first, he rallied back to tie the overall match score at two apiece.Â
