Tech sweeps UTRGV in doubleheader on Friday

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders had a perfect Friday after defeating the UTRGV Vaqueros in their doubleheader at the McLeod Tennis Center, only giving up one point and three sets the entire day. Tech was able to sweep the Vaqueros in the first match, 4-0, before winning the second match by a 6-1 score to close out the day.
In the first contest, the Red Raiders (4-3) started out strong, winning the doubles point with victories at courts two and three. First, the duo of Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak posted a 6-4 win over the UTRGV pairing of Paolo Bonaguro and Will Roberts at two doubles. Then, the tandem of Lorenzo Esquici and Olle Wallin clinched the point at court three whenever they defeated Agustin Salazar and Santiago Serrano, 6-4. At the top court, Reed Collier and Jonas Gundacker were tied with Emilien Burnel and IvoIvo Isqueiro, 5-5, when the point was won.
With the early lead on the Vaqueros (3-8), No. 80-ranked Wallin dominated his match at court one from start to finish, only giving up one game to Burnel to win it by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Then, Pawlak earned his second victory of the day after beating Roberts over at court five, 6-3, 6-0. Clinching the match was Esquici at court three when he overtook Serrano by a 6-2, 6-2 score.
When play was finished, Gundacker was ahead of Salazar, 6-2, 3-3, at two singles. At court four, Niksa Arsic was in a battle with Isqueiro after the Vaquero won set one, 7-5, before Arsic led 2-0 in the next set. Abboud and Bonaguro were competing at court six as the Red Raider led, 6-2, 4-2, when the match was clinched.
In Texas Tech's second match of the doubleheader later that afternoon, the Red Raiders secured their fifth doubles point of the year, and second of the day, after getting wins at courts one and three. Both Abboud and Pawlak made their top court debut against Burnel and Bonaguro, defeating the Vaquero pair by a decisive, 6-2, score. Then, Takeyasu Sekiguchi and Gundacker paired up for the first time this spring at court three, defeating Roberts and Salazar, 6-4, to clinch the point. At court two, the tandem of Wallin and Esquici were ahead, 6-5, when the point was won.
Going into singles, Pawlak recorded his fourth overall victory of the day when he defeated Isqueiro at court four, 6-0, 6-2. Esquici gave Tech its third point of the match after beating Salazar at three singles by a 6-2, 6-4 score. Clinching the match for the Red Raiders was Arsic at court four after overtaking Serrano, 6-4, 6-3.
UTRGV would get its only point of the contest when Burnel won at the top court. But, Tech closed out the day with two more singles wins as Abboud defeated Roberts at court five, 6-4, 6-3, and Sekiguchi won his match at court six against Bonaguro, 6-3, 6-4.
