Red Raiders begin outdoor season in Abilene

Tech will be back home next weekend hosting the Masked Rider Open
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech track and field team will open the 2024 outdoor season down the road in Abilene competing in the Wes Kittley Invitational Friday and Saturday at Elmer Gray Stadium.

Texas Tech will send its groups of throwers, distance runners and pole vaulters this weekend.

The Red Raiders will kick off the meet Friday afternoon with the discus at 12:30 followed by the javelin throw. Two-time Big 12 discus champion Devin Roberson will make his long-awaited 2024 debut – he did not compete indoors. Roberson enters the first week of the season with a PB mark of 59.66m (195-9).

Meanwhile, on the women's side, a pair of highly-touted freshmen in Kyeese Hollands and Leah Howard make their 2024 debut. Hollands, a native of Portland, Ore., ranked No.1 in the state when it came to the javelin and discus. During the 2023 outdoor season, Hollands ranked sixth nationally in the javelin as she claimed first with a PB throw of 164-5.25 at the Nike Outdoor Nationals and went on to cap off her season finishing third at the USATF U20 Championships.

Howard hails from Millville, N.J., and was the state's top javelin thrower at 163-1 and ranked ninth nationally. Her senior season saw her place first in 10 of 12 competitions. She placed 10th at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor meet.
