Lady Raiders tame Cougars in Houston

HOUSTON – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned the season sweep over Houston after a dominating, 62-44 win against the Cougars at the Fertitta Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Texas Tech (14-7, 3-5 Big 12) held Houston (5-14, 1-7 Big 12) to its second lowest scoring total of the year with 44 points, while also holding the Cougs to just 28.9 percent (13-for-45) from the field, the third time this season Tech held its opponent to under 30 percent from the field.
The Lady Raiders forced 21 Houston turnovers which is the most turnovers forced in conference play this season and ninth time this season forcing 20 or more. In addition, Tech held Houston to just four points in the second quarter which ties the lowest amount of points scored in a quarter for the Cougars.
Junior Jasmine Shavers led the Lady Raiders in scoring with her team-best 18th double-figure performance this season as she totaled 15 points, while adding five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Two Lady Raiders tallied eight points apiece in Kilah Freelon and Adlee Blacklock. Freelon led the way on the glass with seven boards and had two steals and two blocks. Blacklock tied for the team-lead with two 3-pointers with Jada Wynn, as Wynn finished with six points against Houston.
As a team, the Lady Raiders totaled 40 rebounds and 10 offensive rebounds, just the third time this season recording 40 or more boards in a game. Shooting 46.4 percent from the field, Tech added 30 bench points to Houston's one and had 13 assists and nine steals.
The Lady Raiders opened the game on a 5-0 run thanks to a layup from Bailey Maupin and a 3-pointer from Wynn. Houston scored a layup to get on the board, then Jalynn Bristow cut to the basket as Maupin fed her a pass to get an easy bucket. Houston made two free throws to make it 7-4 before the media timeout. Houston tied the game at 7-all with a few more free throws before Blacklock nailed a three. The Cougars answered right back with one of their own, then hit another at the buzzer to lead 13-10 at the end of the first.
Texas Tech got five consecutive points off second chances thanks to offensive rebounds from Freelon, who dished it back out to Shavers for three and then made a layup of her own. Freelon then added another bucket with a jumper before Houston made a layup. Maupin and Shavers scored the next four points for the Lady Raiders as they took a 21-15 lead. Out of the media timeout, Blacklock got a steal on Houston's inbound play and followed with a basket. Bristow added a jumper right after to increase Tech's advantage to 10. Then, Blacklock nailed her second 3-pointer of the game before the Cougars scored one more time as the Lady Raiders held them to four points in the quarter to lead 28-17 going into the half.
Houston got the first points of the third quarter before the Lady Raiders went on a 10-0 run thanks to triples from Wynn and Shavers as well as layups from Johnson and Shavers. With 4:32 left in the period, Bristow made a midrange jumper followed by a layup from Freelon to make it 46-21. Denae Fritz hit a wide-open three thanks to a dish from Maya Peat at the 3:24 mark. Then, Houston scored four-straight points. Peat added a turnaround jumper for Tech before the quarter ended with a 51-29 advantage.
The Cougars once again scored first in the final quarter, but Shavers followed with a successful and-one play after getting fouled on a layup. Both teams went scoreless for two and a half minutes until Houston got a layup. Johnson, Freelon and Fritz scored the next six Lady Raider points before Freelon got a block on the other end of the court. Houston went on an 8-2 run with 20 seconds left, but the Lady Raiders held on to the lead to win it by a 62-44 score.
