Kalli Jioshvili Ravva stars as Tech drops five-set match
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Red Raiders (8-12, 0-8) fell in a five-set thriller to No. 24 Colorado (17-3, 8-1) on Wednesday night. The Buffaloes won 3-2 after forcing a fifth set but Texas Tech's freshmen shined in the tough match.
Kalli Jioshvili Ravva and Kenna McKenzie led way offensively for the Red Raiders. Jioshvili Ravva had 25 kills and 17 digs to notch her fourth double-double of the season while hitting .392. McKenzie had 16 kills as she struck the ball with force all night.
Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran set the table well for their hitters, combining for 56 assists led by Dunn's 30. Dunn also had 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Cochran finished with 26 assists and six digs.
Reagan Engler had another double-digit kill night as she posted 10 on an efficient .304 hitting percentage. Addie Kanouff continued her strong play, recording nine kills and getting in on two blocks. Aliyah McDonald and Tatum Johnson each had three kills to round out the major scorers for Tech.
Sierra Grizzle led the match with 20 digs and added four assists as she held down the backline along with freshman Maddie Smotherman who finished with five digs and was a perfect 14-for-14 on serve receive.
Colorado's Ana Burilovic led the match with 26 kills and hit an efficient .393 while adding 12 digs. Cayla Payne was behind her with 15 kills while hitting a blistering .750 for the match.
How it Happened:
The Red Raiders had more kills than Colorado, but the Buffaloes had zero attack errors to Tech's nine and also had four blocks and two aces which made a big difference in the set. Colorado took the early lead with a 25-18 win.
Tech was the author an efficient set this time as they 15 kills and had just two errors as this time Colorado outkilled the Red Raiders. The Red Raiders, however, avoided the Buffalo block and evened the match with a 25-21 set win. McKenzie had five kills in the set as her powerful swings helped the Red Raiders back into the match.
The third set was one of runs as Tech opened up the set with an 8-3 lead before Colorado tied it at 14. Tech had a 15-14 lead heading into the media break and out of that break went on a quick 4-1 run to force another timeout from the Buffaloes. At 23-17, Colorado used its last timeout and went on a 4-0 run to make it close before Tech got back-to-back points to close out the set 25-21 and take the 2-1 lead. The Red Raiders also hit over .300 for the second-straight set.
Colorado took an early 6-3 lead as they looked to push the match to a final fifth set. Tech rallied back to tie it at 10 but the Buffaloes held on and went on to take the set 25-19 as they hit .409 and blocked two attacks.
Tech had a 9-6 lead as they switched sides of the courts in the fifth and final set. Neither team gave an inch as it was tied at 12 before the Buffaloes scored three-straight points to secure the win.
UP NEXT: Tech will be back on the road as they play UCF on Saturday at 12 p.m. CT in Orlando.
