Tech welcomes SMU for Thursday game

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders host the SMU Mustangs for a game on Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. in the United Supermarkets Arena. Tech leads the all-time series against SMU with a 42-5 record, winning eight of the last 10 games. SMU last defeated the Lady Raiders on Dec. 11, 2024 in Dallas by a close 57-61 score.
For the first time since Jan. 16, 2023, a Lady Raider picked up a weekly conference honor as Jalynn Bristow was named to the Big 12 Starting Five, voted on by a panel of media members. This past week, Bristow had two career games - First, posting career-bests in points (19), blocks (7), rebounds (9), field goals (7) and field goal attempts (13) against NC A&T. Versus Texas State, she totaled career-bests in points (22), field goals (9), field goal attempts (17) and steals (3). She ties for the team lead with 17.0 points per game, while leading with 22 rebounds, 7.3 rebounds per game and 10 blocks.
Over the last three games, Gemma Núñez has averaged 8.3 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game and a team-best 7.3 assists per game. She also leads the way with 12 steals and is shooting 47.4 percent from the field (9-for-19). She currently ranks atop the nation with 22 assists and 20th in assists per game. Her 12 steals and 4.0 steals per game ranks seventh and 32nd nationally, respectively. Gemma is also one of two players in the country with at least 20 assists and 10 steals to start the year, joining Florida's Liv McGill (22 assists, 15 steals).
Texas Tech is currently first in the Big 12 and 16th nationally in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just 27.3 percent from the field. The Lady Raiders rank 13th nationally in 3-point percentage defense as they opponents to 14.8 percent from behind the arc. Texas Tech is also 22nd in blocks per game with 6.7 and 43rd in scoring defense as they are only allowing teams to score 47.3 points per game. In the first three games of the season, Tech has held opponents to just 44 field goals (on 161 attempts) and eight 3-pointers (on 54 attempts).
Texas Tech is averaging 80.0 points per game so far, scoring a season-best 83 points in the last game against Texas State. The last time the Lady Raiders scored 80+ points in regulation play was in the 93-60 victory over Sam Houston on Dec. 5, 2023. In addition, Tech's 21 assists against the Bobcats was the first time since Dec. 13, 2023 against Incarnate Word totaling 20+ assists in a game.
Snudda Collins had another impressive game for the Lady Raiders against Texas State, picking up her third double-figure scoring game of the year. She ties for the team lead with 17.0 points per game after scoring 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the three in just 17 minutes of play versus the Bobcats.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The SMU Mustangs (1-1) are looking to bounce back after losing a heartbreaker in buzzer-beater fashion to Kansas State. The Mustangs are coming off a season in which they finished 10-20 overall (2-16 in ACC play), tying for last place in the conference. The team is now coached by Aida Barners, who spent nine seasons at Arizona and holds a 170-115 (.596) career record. SMU averages 70 points per game while holding opponents to 58 points per game on just 33 percent shooting from the field and 18 percent from 3-point range. The team also ranks in the top 30 nationally in blocks, averaging six per game. After a complete roster overhaul from last season, the Mustangs are now led by four players averaging double figures in scoring. Sanyah Jah, who won a championship with South Carolina in 2023-24, is averaging 12.5 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game. Point guard Kyla Deck leads the conference with five steals per game and adds 12 points per game. Guard Zahra King contributes 11.5 points per game, while forward Grace Hall averages 10 points per game on 61 percent shooting and six rebounds per game.
