LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball (10-15, 2-11) fell to West Virginia (15-10, 3-10) in five sets on Wednesday night in the United Supermarkets Arena.
Addie Kanouff and Kenna McKenzie led the way offensively, both finishing with 12 kills. Kanouff hit well, finishing the match with a .375 hitting percentage while Aliyah McDonald hit an impressive .455 percent totaling seven kills on 11 attempts while also adding four blocks.
Kalli Jioshvili Ravva finished with nine kills and 10 digs but also added a career-high four aces. Sierra Grizzle also recorded a career-high in aces with five as Tech finished the match with 12 aces, the third time this year that they recorded 10+ aces in a match this season.
Grizzle led the match with 23 digs as her backrow counterpart Maddie Smotherman recorded nine digs. The two defenders combined to go a perfect 25-for-25 in serve receive to help Tech capitalize on the first touch.
Reagan Engler, Jasmine Martin and Taylor Bahnub all recorded three kills to round out the major scorers for the Red Raiders.
Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran combined for 42 assists and 11 digs, Dunn leading with 22 assists and Cochran with seven digs.
West Virginia was led by Nina Horning and Trinity Sheridan who combined for 48 of the teams 64 kills and did so at an efficient clip, hitting .278 and .356, respectively.
How It Happened:
A closely contested first set was a game of errors as neither team could get a flow on offense, but their stout defense forced hitters into bad spots. Tech capitalized on five service errors, but the Mountaineers were able to make a late push and thanks to a successful challenge forced the set into a win by two scenario. Both teams had multiple chances at set point, but West Virginia ultimately took it 29-27 to take the early lead.
Both teams hit much better in the second set after making adjustments in between sets. McDonald was a huge catalyst, getting five kills on five attempts as Tech hit .357 as a team and got three aces. The Red Raiders opened an 8-3 lead, but the Mountaineers kept chipping away as it was 23-21 in favor of Tech late in the set before the Red Raiders went on to tie the match after a 25-21 set win.
The Mountaineers Nina Horning took over the third set, going for eight kills while hitting .778. As a team, West Virginia hit .583 in the set as they rolled past Tech 25-15 to retake the lead.
Tech responded with a dominant open to the fourth set, going on a 6-1 run to force a West Virginia timeout. Out of the break, Tech didn't slow down as they extended its lead to 14-6 while hitting .444 to force another West Virginia timeout. The Red Raiders didn't let up after that as they went on to win the set 25-15 to force a fifth and final set.
In the final set, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 3-1 lead before both teams traded 3-0 runs as the Mountaineers called a timeout down 7-5. Tech had a 10-8 lead after switching sides, but another West Virginia 5-0 run forced Tech to use both timeouts down 13-10. The timeout did not disrupt the Mountaineers rhythm as they quickly got the last two points to take the 3-2 victory.
UP NEXT: Tech will host Cincinnati at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
