No. 1 Purdue tops No. 15 Tech at Baha Mar Championship
November 21, 2025 | Men's Basketball
NASSAU, Bahamas – No. 1 Purdue turned a close game early into a Baha Mar Championship Final blowout with a 23-3 run to end the first half and never let up in an 86-56 win over No. 15 Texas Tech on Friday at the Baha Mar Convention, Arts and Entertainment Center. The Red Raiders (4-2) were outrebounded by a 43-25 margin and shot just 33.3 percent from the field in the game.
"That was about a bad of a beating as we've taken ever," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "Give Purdue all the credit. They were so efficient in their scoring. I thought we had settled in enough early to get some composure in the 20s with a five-point game and then the floodgates opened in every way. They were getting rhythm shots and offensive rebounding. We got beat on the glass by 18 and when you start to get punched in the mouth like they did to us you have to respond and you have to do it quick, and we didn't. They executed everything and had us on our heels all night."
Texas Tech returns to Lubbock where it will host New Orleans at noon on Wednesday at United Supermarkets Arena.
JT Toppin led the Red Raiders with 15 points and eight rebounds while Christian Anderson scored 13 points with three 3-pointers. Toppin was named to the 2025 Baha Mar Championship All-Tournament Team after he led Tech with 21 points and nine rebounds in an 84-83 win over Wake Forest on Thursday to reach the Finals. Donovan Atwell added nine points with three 3-pointers and Luke Bamgboye, Jaylen Petty and Leon Horner each finished with five points. The Red Raiders finished the game shooting 8-for-34 (23.5 percent) on 3-pointers and were just 20-for-60 (33.3 percent) from the field. Purdue (6-0) was 8-for-14 on 3-pointers, shot 34-for-58 (58.6 percent) and owned a 38-24 scoring advantage in the paint.
Seven Boilermakers finished the game scoring in double figures, led by Oscar Cluff who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Cluff had seven offensive rebounds while the Red Raiders finished with nine as a team. Trey Kaufman-Renn added 12 points and six rebounds while Daniel Jacobsen contributed 11 points and eight rebounds. Braden Smith, C.J. Cox and Fletcher Loyer each had 10 points from the starting lineup with each making two 3-pointers. Â
Purdue took a 49-26 lead into halftime after going on a 20-0 run and went up 23 with a Smith 3-pointer in the final seconds. The game was tied 20-all on a Toppin putback and Tech trailed 26-23 after Anderson hit a 3-pointer. Smith responded on the other end with a 3-pointer that started the 20-0 run that put the Boilermakers up 46-23. Anderson stopped the run with another 3-pointer, but once again Smith responded with a 3-pointer of his own to take the 23-point lead into the break. Anderson and Atwell had three first-half 3-pointers each and were leading the Red Raiders with nine points going into the break.
The Red Raiders, who made 12 3-pointers in their win over Wake Forest, was just 1-for-14 on 3-pointers in the second half in the loss to the top-ranked Boilermakers who won by 30 and led by as many as 33.
