November 26, 2025 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK – JT Toppin recorded a double-double and Christian Anderson knocked down a career-high six 3-pointers to help lead No. 20 Texas Tech to an 82-50 win over New Orleans on Wednesday afternoon at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders (5-2) extended the program's non-conference home winning streak to 43 games after making nine more 3-pointers than the Privateers (2-5) and owning a 47-30 rebounding advantage.
"Obviously, we're really thankful with it being Thanksgiving to compete here at home," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "We had a couple of good practices coming into this one and our team continues to improve. That's a good team and they're going to win a lot of games. I thought our defense made a big jump today and our competitiveness was better. We were more connected on the offensive end."
Anderson scored a game-high 23 points after finishing the game 6-for-9 on 3-pointers and also led the Red Raiders with five assists and three steals. He was 5-for-6 on 3-pointers going into the break and knocked down his sixth to set a new career-high, passing five made against West Virginia and Kansas last season during Big 12 play. Toppin went for 19 points and a season-high 16 rebounds to record his third double-double this season and 34th of his career. He pulled down nine offensive rebounds and was 9-for-18 from the field, including making one 3-pointer. Toppin's 16 rebounds were his second most in his career, falling two shy of 18 rebounds against Saint Joseph's last season. Toppin is now averaging 21.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game this season while Anderson is at 18.6 points and 7.1 assists per game.
Donovan Atwell and Luke Bamgboye added 13 points each and LeJuan Watts finished with 12 points to give the Red Raiders five players in double figures in the game where they shot 28-for-64 (43.8 percent) from the field and 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) on 3-pointers. Atwell was 3-for-7 on 3-pointers and has now made three or more in six of seven games played this season. Bamgboye scored a season-high 13 points after going 7-of-10 at the free-throw line while matching his season-high with four blocked shots. Tech finished with seven blocks as a team with Toppin adding two more and Jaylen Petty having one. Watts also provided six rebounds to go along with his 12 points while Bamgboye had five rebounds.
Jakevi Buckley led New Orleans with 16 points and four steals while Mathok Majok had nine points and six rebounds. The Privateers finished the game 20-for-54 from the field and were just 2-of-15 on 3-pointers. Texas Tech forced New Orleans into 17 turnovers and owned a 14-4 scoring advantage on points off turnovers.
Tech took a 41-34 lead into halftime with Anderson already hitting five 3-pointers and Toppin with a double-double. The Red Raiders opened the game on a 7-0 run, starting with Toppin connecting on a hook shot on the first possession followed by an Atwell 3-pointer and a Toppin fastbreak layup before the Privateers got on the board. Atwell's second 3-pointer gave Tech a 10-2 lead but New Orleans went on a 10-0 run to take its first lead of the game. Anderson would spark a 10-0 run by Tech with a 3-pointer for a 20-18 lead that would grow to a 27-18 advantage with him hitting another and then a free throw. Anderson led all scorers in the first half with 18 points after going 5-of-6 on 3-pointers in the first half while Toppin had 11 rebounds and 10 points through 20 minutes.
Tech went into the break shooting 7-for-13 from beyond the arc while the Privateers were just 2-of-6. Bamgboye and Toppin had two blocks each in the half and the Red Raiders had a 24-16 rebounding advantage, including grabbing 10 offensive rebounds. Toppin already had six offensive rebounds at halftime and would score six quick points during an 11-2 run to open the second half that turned a somewhat close game into the 32-point final decision.
The Red Raiders, who are now 4-0 at home this season, return to action at 2 p.m. on Sunday against Wyoming at United Supermarkets Arena.
