No. 21 Tech ties best start in program history

LUBBOCK, Texas – More milestones were reached tonight as the Texas Tech Lady Raiders tied for their best start in program history (2003-04), while going 2-0 to begin conference play for the first time since 2011-12 as they took down the UCF Knights, 73-55, at the United Supermarkets Arena.
The No. 21 Lady Raiders (15-0, 2-0 Big 12) were led by Jalynn Bristow, who had 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field (.615). Bristow also led the way with three triples, five rebounds and two blocks. Snudda Collins posted 15 points and added three rebounds and a steal in the game against UCF (8-5, 0-2 Big 12). Bailey Maupin was in double-figures for the 13th time this year as she had 12 points while dishing out three assists.
Gemma Núñez lit up the stat sheet once again, shooting 55.5 percent from the field for 11 points and leading the team with five rebounds and eight assists. Núñez did not commit a single turnover, while recording two steals on the night. Denae Fritz also tied for the team lead with five rebounds and had a team-best and season-high of three steals against the Knights.
The Lady Raiders shot 28-for-63 from the field (.444) and made seven 3-pointers in the game. In addition, they forced 20 UCF turnovers and held the Knights to 27.3 percent from behind the arc. Texas Tech recorded 17 assists in the game and only committed nine turnovers, the team's lowest outing all year. Â
Defense was on display for both teams as the first points of the game were scored at the 7:47 mark of the first quarter when Núñez got a layup. Maupin followed with a three to give Tech the 5-0 lead before UCF got its first bucket with a jumper at 7:05. Núñez responded with a reverse layup, then Fritz made a wide-open triple to increase the lead to six. Maupin followed by adding one of her own for the 13-6 lead. UCF went on a quick, 4-0 run before the Lady Raiders got baskets from Sarengbe Sanogo and Núñez to end the period with the 21-13 advantage.
UCF opened the next quarter with a second-chance jumper before Jada Malone went on to score the next six Lady Raider points with two layups and two free throws. The Knights hit a three in response, but Bristow nailed one right back to keep the lead at 30-22. After the media timeout, UCF made two free throws, then Bristow hit another 3-pointer to spark a 7-0 run. Collins was able to make a mid-range jumper followed by a layup to force a UCF timeout. Bristow continued the run with a jumper before UCF finally stopped it after not scoring for almost three minutes. Collins scored a three with 37 seconds left, then the Knights added a layup as Tech led 42-28 at half.
Fritz led the way with two steals to begin the third period as UCF didn't score until two minutes into it. Collins scored four of the next six points herself. Then, UCF made a jumper right before the media timeout to close the gap at 46-34. Maupin would score the next four points in the game to give Tech the 50-34 advantage, highlighted by a fastbreak layup on a Fritz steal. The Knights didn't score a field goal for almost five minutes until they made a three. Sanogo was able to get a free throw with 0.6 seconds left as the Lady Raiders led 53-41.
UCF began the final period with two free throws, then the Lady Raiders went on a 7-0 run, with Bristow scoring all of those points for Tech. The run kept going with two free throws by Collins before UCF finally answered with a layup. Collins added a turnaround jumper before Núñez made a free throw to make it 65-47. The Knights got six-straight points on two and-one opportunities. Adlee Blacklock stopped the UCF momentum with a steal, dishing it to Núñez on a fastbreak layup. The Lady Raiders scored four of the next six points thanks to a couple free throws from Bristow and a another fastbreak layup by Núñez. UCF made two free throws, then Maupin added yet another fastbreak layup to close it out with a 73-55 win.
Up next, the Lady Raiders are back at the United Supermarkets Arena for a game against Arizona on Saturday at 6 p.m.
