LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite having solid offensive rebounding efforts and limiting themselves to just six turnovers on the night, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell just short to the Cincinnati Bearcats on Wednesday evening, 59-56, at the United Supermarkets Arena.
Junior Jasmine Shavers had a top-class performance with 22 points, her team-leading 24th game in double-figure scoring this year for Texas Tech (14-14, 3-12 Big 12). Against the Bearcats (15-10, 7-8 Big 12), Shavers shot phenomenally, including a 50 percent clip from downtown (6-for-12) earning a new season high in 3-pointers with six.
The Lady Raiders also put together a very solid performance on the glass, totaling 18 offensive rebounds and 41 total rebounds on the game. This was the sixth time this season with 15 or more offensive rebounds and fourth time with 40 or more boards in a game. Juniors Sanogo Sarengbe and Kilah Freelon both led the way with seven rebounds apiece, followed by Shavers with six. Freelon also led the Lady Raiders with three assists while Denae Fritz led with three steals.
The Lady Raider defense successfully slowed down Cincinnati's leading scorer Jillian Hayes to just five points and 2-for-6 shooting on the night, which is 11 points below her season average of 16.4 points per game. Texas Tech's defensive effort created 13 Bearcat turnovers and was able to cash in 15 points off takeaways.
The Lady Raiders only tallied six turnovers on the night, which is the least amount of turnovers in a game since having two against Angelo State on December 9, 2020. In addition, Texas Tech shot 10-for-28 from behind the arc (35.7%) and recorded its third game this year with double-figure threes.
Up next, the Lady Raiders hit the road to Orlando for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday, February 22 against the UCF Knights inside CFE Arena.
