
No. 9 TCU defeats Lady Raiders in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas – Despite Jasmine Shavers and Loghan Johnson scoring in double figures, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell to the No. 9-ranked TCU Horned Frogs by a score of 63-42 on Saturday afternoon at Schollmaier Arena.
For Texas Tech (14-12, 3-10 Big 12), Shavers recorded her 22nd double-digit game of the season with a team-leading 15 points. Totaling double figures in seven of the last eight contests, Shavers tallied a team-best two steals for her 13th game this season with two or more steals in a game.
Scoring her fourth double-figure game this year against TCU (22-3, 10-2 Big 12) was sophomore Loghan Johnson, who had 11 in the game on 4-for-7 shooting from the field. On the rebounding side, the team was led by Jada Wynn (5) as she recorded her fourth game this season with five or more boards. In addition, Shavers, Johnson and Kilah Freelon each had four rebounds apiece.
In the first quarter, TCU started off with the first five points before Bailey Maupin made a jumper. The Horned Frogs were able to score five more for a 10-2 advantage heading into the media timeout at the 4:23 mark. Out of the timeout, junior Adlee Blacklock came in a nailed a three to cut the deficit in half. Then, Johnson made two free throws to make it 10-7. Both teams made some free throws over the next three minutes as TCU led 13-9 thanks to a couple of their own. The Horned Frogs went up by six after a layup with 55 seconds left and held on to that lead at the end of it.
Tech and TCU went scoreless in the first two minutes of the second quarter until Shavers connected with a step-back three to make it 15-12. TCU responded right after with a layup as the Horned Frogs led by five. Shavers was able to draw a shooting foul and make both free throws, but TCU went on a 7-0 run to answer as they led 25-14. Johnson followed with a tough layup through traffic, then got a steal on the other end right after. Just like in the first quarter, Blacklock nailed a 3-pointer coming out of the media timeout to spark a 10-2 run, highlighted by a Shavers layup to tie it at 26-all. TCU made one free throw at the end to close out the half with a slim, 27-26 advantage.
Freelon tied the game at 27-27 with a free throw in the first minute of the third period. TCU added a long two before Shavers hit a mid-range jumper. The Horned Frogs were able to score five-consecutive points to lead 34-29 and force a Tech timeout. After the timeout, Johnson scored a layup to cut the deficit to three, but the Horned Frogs went on a 5-0 run to respond and lead 39-31. TCU increased its lead to 11 at the end of the period after scoring five of the next seven points, 44-33.
TCU began the final quarter with a free throw before Shavers made a layup. The Horned Frogs followed with a 3-pointer to force another Texas Tech timeout as they led 48-35 with 8:28 left in the game. Neither team made a shot for almost two minutes until Shavers got a bucket to make it 48-37. TCU answered with a 7-1 run before Sarengbe Sanogo got an easy basket thanks to a dish from Maupin. Johnson scored again to get into double-figures, but TCU was able to maintain their lead to win it by a 63-42 score.
Up next, the Lady Raiders have a bye week before hosting the Baylor Bears on Saturday, February 15 at 2 p.m. in the United Supermarkets Arena. Â
