Tech, No. 10 OU to meet Tuesday night in Frisco

FRISCO, Texas – Texas Tech Baseball heads to Frisco Tuesday night for a midweek contest against No. 10 Oklahoma in Frisco. First pitch from Riders Field is set for 6:30 p.m.

The Red Raiders and Sooners will meet for the 27th consecutive season on Tuesday night but for the first time as non-conference foes since 2022 when Tech and OU met in a midweek contest in Amarillo.

Tuesday's contest will mark the end of four-game road trip that will close a busy road stretch for Tech who will be playing its 25th game of the season and 16th game away from The Rip.

* Texas Tech closes a four-game road trip on Tuesday night when they head to Frisco for a matchup with former Big 12 foe OU at Riders Field. The game will be streamed live on D1Baseball.com and marks the first time Tech and OU will meet as non-conference foes since OU left the Big 12 Conference back in July.

* When the Red Raiders take the field Tuesday for their 25th game of the season, they will look to shake off a tough three-game sweep at Kansas State this past weekend that featured a 10-5 loss on Friday, a 6-3 loss on Saturday and a 5-4 walk-off loss on Sunday. The walk-off loss on Sunday marked the first time that Tech lost in walk-off fashion since last Apr. 28 at Kansas. In the weekend series against Kansas State the Red Raiders managed just 12 total runs. On Sunday the Red Raiders were done in by leaving 13 total men on base after failing to score with the bases loaded and no out and with runners on first and second and no out twice.

* On Tuesday night against OU, the Red Raiders will turn to freshman Connor Mohan for his first career start as a Red Raider. Mohan who has pitched in five games and 10.1 total innings grew up in nearby Burleson, Texas, just one hour south and west of where tonight's game in Frisco will be played. The Red Raiders with a victory against OU could notch their first top-10 and top-25 victory of the season. The Red Raiders last top-10 regular season win came on Apr. 11, 2023 against No. 8 Stanford.

MATCHUP NOTES:

SEEN THEM A TIME OR TWO

On Tuesday, Tech will see a familiar foe in the University of Oklahoma. Meeting for the first time since Oklahoma moved into the SEC Conference after leaving the Big 12, Tech and OU will meet for the 27th straight season.

ALL FOUR TIME ZONES IN THE FIRST MONTH

In the first four weeks of the season the Red Raiders have been busy, as Tech played in four different states and four different time zones in the seasons first 14 games. The Red Raiders opened the season in North Carolina and the eastern time zone before coming home to Lubbock for a weekend set with UCI. The Red Raiders after spending a weekend in Las Vegas (PT), traveled to Arizona to face GCU. On Friday and Saturday, Arizona was on Mountain Time before the spring ahead on Sunday morning switched Arizona to Pacific Time.

HEART BREAK IN THE LITTLE APPLE

Heading to the ninth with a 4-2 lead after enjoying the lead for the entire game (Tech scored a pair in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead) the Red Raiders were walked off by |Kansas State on Sunday when the Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth. The loss was espically hard for Tech as it secured the series sweep for Kansas State and marked the first time since last April the 26th that Tech was walked off in a contest. Ironically enough, that contest also occured in Kansas, as KU walked off the Red Raiders by a score of 4-3. The loss was an oddity for Tech as it marked the first time that Tech lost when leading after either seven or eight innings. The Red Raiders were 7-0 and 6-0 when leading after either the seventh or eighth innings. The setback also marked the first time that Tech lost when having at least three shutout innings this season, the Red Raiders were a perfect 3-of-3 on Sunday in shutdown innings.

16 HOURS BACK IN THE LBK

The Red Raiders return to the road for the Tuesday contest against OU after spending a quick 12 hours in Lubbock, The Red Raiders charter flight from Manhattan landed back in Lubbock around 9 p.m. on Sunday night and the Red Raiders hit the road for Frisco on Monday afternoon around 1 p.m.

TOP-10 WIN TIMES TWO

The Red Raiders enter the eighth week of the season with an RPI of 73. Tuesday's contest against No. 10 Oklahoma presents a pair of key opportunities, as it not only represents a chance for a top-10 ranked win, it also presents and opportunity for a top-10 RPI/Quad-One victory as the Sooners enter the contest at No. 9 overall in the RPI and No. 10 in the D1Baseball poll. The Sooners are ranked inside the top-10 of all four major polls. The Red Raiders are 0-7 so far this season in Q1 games having lost three times at UNC, three times at K-State and once to UT. The Red Raiders are 46-48 all-time under Tim Tadlock against top-10 foes (includes Regionals, Super Regionals and Omaha) and will look to snap a eight-game losing streak against top-10 foes.

THE SCHEDULE HAS CHALLENGED US

In addition to playing 16 of the first 25 games away from home the Red Raiders have played one of the nations most difficult and challenging schedules. Entering action this week the Red Raiders have played just three Quad Four games (Tech is 2-1) and just eight games against Q3 and Q4 teams. When you expand that out (including OU who enters at No. 9 in the RPI) the Red Raiders will end up playing 17 of their first 25 against Q1 and Q2 opponents. The Red Raiders trail just Minnesota (1) and Xavier (2) in overall schedule according to Warren Nolan and are one of six programs in the entire country to play fewer than four Q4 games that list includes Big 12 foe BYU (1), Maine (1), UCLA (2), UConn (2) and New Orleans (2). When you expand that list out to fewer than eight Q3&4 games the Red Raiders have played the second-fewest Q3 and Q4 games in the country trailing just Boston College. The Red Raiders are one of four teams in the country with eight or fewer Q3/Q4 games joining BC (6), North Dakota State (8) and CSUN (8).

RACKING UP THE FREQUENT FLYER MILES

The Red Raiders have been road warriors this season as, Tech has played just nine of the first 25 games (including tonight's game against OU) at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. After opening the season at UNC and hosting UC Irvine, the Red Raiders began a stretch of three straight road weekends in Las Vegas, Phoenix and Houston. Since Feb. 24, the Red Raiders have played just six total home games: A mid week series against UCSD, a three-game weekend series against TCU and a midweek against Tarleton. The Red Raiders have racked up nearly 10,000 miles (9,241 miles) of travel through the first 47 days of the season. The Red Raiders have also spent 22 nights in a hotel through the first 47 days including last night's stay in Frisco. The Red Raiders have also taken 16 flights.

ROAD RED RAIDERS

The Red Raiders will become accustom to the road in 2025 as Tech will play just 26 of 53 games at home this season. Starting with the weekend set at No. 6 UNC, the Red Raiders played 12 of their first 17 games away from the friendly confines of Rip Griffin Park at Dan Law Field. That number expands to just just 10 of their first 26 games at home. In the end, Texas Tech's 27 road games will bring the squad to seven different states: (Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and West Virginia). The Red Raiders in 2025 will play just 31 of 53 games inside the State of Texas. The Red Raiders 26 home games are the fewest in a season since 2022 when Tech also played just 26 games at Rip Griffin Park. The fewest home games the Red Raiders have played in a season was 2009 when Tech played just 22 total home games. This weekend series at GCU will mark the second of three straight road trips for the Red Raiders who open Big 12 play next weekend at Houston. The Red Raiders over the first 17 games of the season (three this weekend and three next weekend) will play just five total road games.

Tech returns home for the first time in 10 days when they welcome the Cincinnati for the first all-time regular season matchup between the two programs. The Red Raiders and Bearcats have met just once before all-time, a 10-5 Tech win last season at the 2024 Big 12 Championships. The weekend series begins on Friday night.
