Reagan Engler records another double-double in Red Raiders win
FLAGSTAFF, Arizona – Texas Tech (5-2) had a close match on its hands after Southern Utah (0-7) came back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set. The Red Raiders ultimately closed it out with a 3-2 win to secure their fifth win of the season.
Reagan Engler picked up her team-high fourth double-double of the season after leading the team with 14 kills and adding 10 digs. Katelyn Cochran posted a season-high 43 assists, two away from her career high of 45, and added nine digs.
Kalli Jioshvili Ravva was second on the team in kills with nine despite only playing the final three sets. Sierra Grizzle led the team with 15 digs and notched five assists. Ashlyn Bellamy picked up five kills and five digs in the first two sets as Addie Kanouff and Aliyah McDonald also picked up five kills. McDonald also led the team with five blocks and finished the match with 9.0 points.
Shelby Ignash and Tatum Johnson tacked on three kills each as Taylor Bahnub and Jasmine Martin each recorded two kill to round out the scorers for the Red Raiders. Johnson also was in on four blocks, finishing the match with 6.5 points. Emily Contreras picked up her seventh aces of the season as she had five digs.
How it Happened:
Tech jumped out to an early lead after hitting .333 in the first set with 13 kills. It was a back-and-forth that saw eight ties and three lead changes and was tied all the way until 22-22 when the Red Raiders rattled off the final three points to take the 25-22 win.
The Red Raiders did not hit with the same efficiency in the second set but limited Southern Utah to a hitting percentage of just .028 despite not recording a block. Southern Utah got close in the set, trailing 19-17 before a 6-1 run by the Red Raiders got them a 25-18 win.
Southern Utah made the necessary adjustments in the next two sets, hitting .333 in the third set and then .345 in the fourth. The Thunderbirds held a 17-12 lead and were looking to run away with the set, but Tech rallied back with a 7-3 run that got them within one point. Southern Utah got back on track with a run of its own and took the set 25-22 to extend the match.
The Thunderbirds held the lead the whole way as they built off the momentum from their set win. Southern Utah was in the driver's seat, taking the set 25-19.
Tech rebounded in the fifth set as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead to force a Thunderbird timeout. Southern Utah wouldn't go away and got within one at 12-11 but an Aliyah McDonald kill quickly took the momentum away from Southern Utah's bench as Tech held on to win 15-11 and escape with the 3-2 win.
