Reagan Engler continues her strong start to the season
FLAGSTAFF, Arizona – Texas Tech (5-3) fell to host team Northern Arizona (6-2) on Friday night by a score of 3-0. Reagan Engler continued her streak of matches with double-digit kills as she posted a team-high 12, making her one of just two Red Raiders to record 10+ kills in each of the first eight matches of the season in the last 20 years.
Along with Engler, Addie Kanouff had a solid night posting nine kills and two blocks while Kalli Jiosvhili Ravva and Aliyah McDonald both had five kills. Tatum Johnson finished with four kills as Jasmine Martin and Kenna McKenzie combined for the final five kills for Tech.
Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran split time setting. Dunn led the team with 18 assists as Cochran dished out 14 of her own. Sierra Grizzle led the team with 17 digs and was a perfect 15-for-15 on serve receive. Engler and Ashlyn Bellamy were solid on serve receive as well, combining to go 30-for-30 as Tech was able to get a good first touch.
NAU's Hanah Stoddard led the match with 22 kills while hitting .488 and recording 12 digs. Stoddard made the biggest difference in the match as she was responsible all four of the final Lumberjack kills.
How it Happened:
The Lumberjacks were in control from the jump as they opened the match on a 10-3 run before the Red Raiders could get their legs back under them after a long five-set match against Sothern Utah earlier in the day. Tech was able to cut the lead down to four at 20-16, but both teams traded the final 10 points of the match as it finished 25-21.
The Red Raiders responded in the second set, taking a 5-2 lead thanks to four kills off the right arm of Jioshvili Ravva. NAU was able to reclaim the lead at 15-12 heading into the media timeout and out of that timeout went on an 8-2 run to ice the set. The Lumberjacks went on to win the set 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead.
The third set was much more back-and-forth with both teams mounting late comebacks. NAU had a 18-15 lead before Tech tied it up at 21-21 and eventually took a 24-22 lead before the Lumberjacks went on a rally of their own. NAU rattled off three straight points to regain the lead and eventually win the match 3-0 thanks to a 28-26 set win.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will face UC San Diego at 1 p.m. CT to close out their time in Flagstaff.
