Team/Event Notes:
- After making its first appearance since 2015 at the Fighting Illini Invitational a year ago, Texas Tech will be making its second consecutive appearance this week, including a second consecutive appearance for Red Raider golfers Connor Graham and Tim Wiedemeyer
- Texas Tech finished tied for ninth as a team in 2024, bettering its 15th-place finish in 2015.
- The Red Raiders were led by Charlie DeLong last fall, who is now on the PGA Tour Americas; he shot 2-over-par (212) and tied for 22nd, while Graham came in second among Red Raiders by shooting 4-over-par (214) and tied for 32nd. Meanwhile, Wiedemeyer shot 7-over-par (217) and finished tied for 48th.
- The Red Raiders have played in one tournament thus far this season after debuting in the Top 25 in three different Men's College Golf preseason polls: Golf Channel (9), GCAA/Coaches (T-15), and Golfweek (19).Â
- The Red Raiders lost two seniors from their 2025 NCAA Championship squad, DeLong and Calum Scott, to graduation, and added transfer Adam Bresnu, as well as freshmen Simon Hovdal and Brady McHenry, to their 2025-26 squad. Returning from last season include Luke D'Alise, Graham, Ben Gregg, Hill, Sean Keeling, and Wiedemeyer.
- Graham returns from an offseason that included participating in The Open Championship, the Arnold Palmer Cup, and, most recently, the 50th Walker Cup, Sept. 6-7.
- Graham was also tabbed as one of 25 individuals for the Haskins Award preseason watch list.
- Gregg and Wiedemeyer also played in some high-level amateur events during the offseason, most recently at the 125th United States Amateur Championships. Both qualified for the Round of 64 match play after starting among 312 players in stroke play. Wiedemeyer advanced as far as the Round of 32.
- Texas Tech finished 10th at the 2025 NCAA Championships, its fourth Top 10 finish in the Greg Sands era and sixth in program history.
- 11 of 15 teams in the field are ranked or receiving votes in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll released by the GCAA on Aug. 29.Â
- Programs in the 2025 tournament field have combined for 19 of 32 spots in the NCAA Championship match play finals, and nine out of the 16 team titles, since the current format began in 2009
- 12 of 15 teams in the field competed in the 2025 NCAA Regionals
- 10 of the 15 teams in the field advanced to the 2025 NCAA Championship stroke play
- The field includes four of the final eight teams that made up match play at the 2025 NCAA Championship: quarterfinalists Arizona State and Texas, semifinalist Florida, and champion Oklahoma State
- The club is home to several premier events, having played host to the U.S. Amateur U.S. Opens (1928, 2003), two PGA Championships (1925, 1961), a U.S. Senior Open (1997), plus five (1920, 1927, 1933, 1968, 1971) and the BMW Championship in 2020 and 2023.
- The Fighting Illini Invitational has a reputation for producing PGA Tour greats.
- Former participants include Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Scottie Scheffler, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm, and Sahith Theegala — all of whom went on to win on the PGA TOUR, including major championships and Ryder Cups.
- Since its debut in 2006:
- 5 of the last 7 NCAA Champion teams competed at the Fighting Illini Invitational.
- 10 of the last 18 NCAA Champion teams have played at the Fighting Illini Invitational.
- Alumni have gone on to win over 150 PGA TOUR titles, including 21 of the last 35 major championships.
