The Bears will come to Lubbock as the Red Raiders open Big 12 play tomorrow night
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech (8-4) is set for Big 12 play the rest of the season and it begins tomorrow night at 6 p.m. against No. 20 Baylor in the United Supermarkets Arena. Fans are encouraged to wear black for the first conference match of the season.
Tech is 52-44 all-time against the Bears but 2-14 against a ranked Baylor team. The Red Raiders have had success against teams ranked No. 20, holding a 4-7 record against them, the most in program history.
Baylor (6-3, 1-0) already had its Big 12 opener, taking down UCF in straight sets last week. The Bears have one of the best middle blockers in the conference, Gabrielle Essix who is currently fifth in the Big 12 in blocks per set (1.34). Defense will be at a high level in this match as Tech's Sierra Grizzle leads the Big 12 in digs per set (4.72).
Red Raider Classic Recap:
Tech had its fourth-straight 2-1 weekend after defeating UAlbany and Incarnate Word while falling to Ole Miss. The Red Raiders were in their home arena for the first time this season and made a good impression on the home crowd thanks to stellar performances from Kalli Jioshvili Ravva and Ashlyn Bellamy who broke out in their first matches in Lubbock.
The highlight of the weekend came against Incarnate Word when, after falling behind 0-2, the Red Raiders rallied back to pull off the reverse sweep led by a 20 kill, 20 dig performance from Ashlyn Bellamy.

Quick Hits:
- Freshman outside hitter Kalli Jioshvili Ravva was incredible in her first weekend in Lubbock, Texas. She recorded back-to-back double doubles against Ole Miss and Incarnate Word. The French native tallied 54 kills on the weekend including 22 against Ole Miss, which made her the first Red Raider this season to eclipse the 20-kill mark. She got it done on defense as well, recording a career-high 21 digs against Incarnate Word to help her finish the weekend with 40 digs.
- For most players, a "sophomore slump" is a common occurrence. For Addie Kanouff, her sophomore year has been a welcomed sight for the Red Raiders. After appearing in just four matches last season, the 6'5 rightside has taken on a much bigger role this year and she has performed brilliantly. Kanouff is currently second on the team in kills (119), points (136.5), hitting percentage (.244), attacks (312) and blocks (31.0). She recorded a career-high 16 kills in Tech's win over UAlbany and has recorded three matches where she has hit over .350 with 10+ kills.
- After seeing limited time in her last two seasons at Houston, Ashlyn Bellamy has made an immediate impact for the Red Raiders this year and her contributions were highlighted by a career performance in Tech's comeback win over Incarnate Word. Against the Cardinals, Bellamy recorded a career-high 23 kills to go along with a career-high 20 dig and did it all while hitting just under .300. The junior has played in all 12 matches this season, starting 11 of them and has been one of the team's best backrow defenders, attackers and servers this season.
- Reagan Engler has taken a big step up this season, currently leading the team in kills, points and double-doubles. Engler has been playing all six rotations for the first time in her career after making the move to outside hitter this offseason and has flourished. Engler is just the second Red Raider in the last 20 years to record 10+ kills in each of the first nine matches of a season.
- Freshmen Kenna McKenzie and Shelby Ignash have seen increased playing time over the course of the preseason as they continue to take advantage of their opportunities. Setters Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran have done a stellar job of setting up their hitter for success as Cochran recently recorded 52 assists in a match, a career best. Sierra Grizzle is top 10 in the country in total digs (236) and currently leads the Big 12 in digs per set (4.72) and total digs.
