Tech falls at Denver on Friday

DENVER – The Texas Tech Red Raiders fell in a hard-fought match to the Denver Pioneers, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Denver Tennis Park.
Texas Tech (1-1) earned a gritty doubles point against Denver (0-1) to begin the match. At the top court, Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri went back and forth with the duo of Samuel Rovai and Ryoma Mishiro. Tech would get a break to go up 3-2, then hold the rest of the way for the 6-4 victory. Denver evened it up, however, with a win at court two, 6-3.
The Red Raider duo of Felipe Pagnacco and Ludovico Vaccari battled the pairing of Raffaello Papajcik and Aaron Beduhn over at court three. Taking a 2-0 lead, the Pioneers would win three of the next four points to tie it at 3-all. Heading into a tiebreaker, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 4-1 lead and held their momentum, winning it by a 7-6 (4) score to clinch the doubles point.
Denver was able to answer immediately in singles, taking five of six first sets. The Pioneers then tied the match at 1-1 with a victory at court three, 6-1, 6-3. Denver took a 2-1 lead after posting a 6-3, 6-3 win at court four. Guglieri earned his second win of the day with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over Beduhn at court six to tie the match up at 2-all.
Even though the Red Raiders forced third sets, the Pioneers recorded wins on courts two and five to clinch the victory. Over at court one, Arsic competed against Rovai and won a three-set thriller after the match was clinched. Arsic fell by a 3-6 score in set one, before winning the next set, 6-2. He was up 5-2 in the third before Rovai came back to force a tiebreak, where Arsic prevailed by a 7-6 (5) score, to make it 4-3 overall in the contest. Â
Next up, the Red Raiders host the Nebraska Cornhuskers for a match on Jan. 30 at 3 p.m. in the McLeod Tennis Center.
