No. 19 Tech dominates the Utes in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY – Senior Snudda Collins had a career-night to help the No. 19 Texas Tech Lady Raiders dominate the Utah Utes, 77-49, on Saturday evening at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Â
For Texas Tech (20-2, 7-2 Big 12), Collins posted a career-high of 28 points, 20 of those coming in the first half, on 9-for-15 shooting from the field (.600) and 6-for-7 shooting from behind the arc (.857). Her field goals and 3-pointers were also career bests against Utah (14-6, 5-3 Big 12).
Senior Bailey Maupin recorded her team-leading 20th double-digit scoring game of the year with 15 points on 50 percent shooting (6-for-12). She added two steals in the game. Senior Jada Malone tallied her eighth double-digit game this year with 11 points on 60 percent shooting from the field (3-for-5) and five free throws. Senior Gemma Núñez led the team in both rebounds and assists with nine and five, respectively, and recorded her third-straight game with five assists.
Texas Tech outrebounded the Utes, 34-25, and held Utah to just 32.7 percent from the field (16-for-49). Utah, who came into tonight making 9.4 three-pointers per game to rank 10th in the nation, missed its first 12 three-point attempts before making three in the final quarter to go 18.8 percent from behind the arc (3-for-16). The Lady Raiders also shot 51.9 percent from the field (28-for-54) and 9-for-20 from the three-point line (.450). In addition, Tech totaled 17 assists, led by Núñez with five and Sidney Love with four.
The Lady Raiders opened the game on a 4-0 run thanks to baskets from Sarengbe Sanogo and Denae Fritz. Utah made two free throws to cut the deficit in half. Collins came in off the bench and immediately scored with a midrange jumper for a 6-2 lead. The Utes made a fastbreak layup before the media timeout to make it 6-4. After that, the Lady Raiders went on an 11-0 run, highlighted by 10 points from Collins, who made two 3-pointers in that span. Utah answered with a 4-0 run on free throws, then Sanogo ended the quarter with a layup to give Tech the 19-8 advantage.
Both teams went back-and-forth to begin the second quarter, with Utah outscoring Tech slightly, 6-5 in that three-minute time frame. Tech would respond with the next six points to force a Utah timeout thanks to baskets from Bailey Maupin, Sidney Love and Collins. Out of the timeout, the Utes got a quick layup, but Collins made yet another three to make it 33-16. Collins hit her fourth three of the game to reach 20 points in the half at the 3:11 mark. Utah scored four of the last seven points, with Love hitting a 3-pointer, as Tech led 39-20 at the half.
Fritz opened the third quarter with a layup, then Jalynn Bristow grabbed a steal on an inbounds throw and made the layup, drawing the and-one on the play. Maupin added to the lead with a triple, then made a jumper right after for a 49-20 lead. Both teams traded points, highlighted by eight-straight points for Tech from Malone. Collins made back-to-back threes to extend the lead. Utah closed the period with two free throws to make it 64-32 after three.
Maupin converted a successful and-one play to begin the final quarter before Utah scored the next five points. After a timeout at 5:52, Utah made a couple of free throws to make it 67-38. Collins stopped the Utes' run with two free throws with 5:01 left in the game. Utah made a layup right after, but Maupin scored a last-second midrange bucket in response. Núñez scored a driving layup, but Utah hit two-straight threes to cut in the lead. Sanogo answered with a second-chance putback after grabbing the offensive board as Tech led by a 77-46 score. Utah got another three with 19 seconds left, but the Lady Raiders would win the game 77-49.
