Iowa State defeats No. 21 Lady Raiders

LUBBOCK, Texas – Senior Sidney Love surpassed 1,000 career points and senior Bailey Maupin now ranks fifth all-time in scoring, but the No. 21-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell to the RV Iowa State Cyclones, 84-70, on Wednesday evening at the United Supermarkets Arena. Â
For Texas Tech (20-3, 7-3 Big 12), Love led the way with a season-high of 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field (.545) and 40 percent shooting from behind the arc (2-for-5). Love also led the Lady Raiders with four assists and two steals, while adding three rebounds against Iowa State (17-5, 5-5 Big 12).
Maupin recorded 16 points on 50 percent shooting from the field (4-for-8) and from the three (2-for-4) to surpass Sheryl Swoopes for fifth all-time in career scoring. Totaling a team-best 21 double-figure scoring games, Maupin tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
Also in double-digits was Snudda Collins, who tallied 16 points with two 3-pointers as well. In addition, Denae Fritz also had a team-best of five boards while adding two 3-pointers, three assists and eight points on the night. Texas Tech shot 42.6 percent from the field (23-for-54) while making nine threes.
Iowa State opened the game on a 6-0 run, but Fritz hit a three to cut the lead in half. Jalynn Bristow made a layup to make it 6-5, but the Cyclones responded with a 7-0 run for a 13-5 advantage. Fritz nailed another triple to stop their momentum, but Iowa State then scored the next four points. Love added a layup, followed by a Collins 3-pointer. Fritz and Maupin made layups, but the Cyclones scored the last five points of the period for a 26-18 lead.
The Cyclones extended their lead after scoring the first four points of the second quarter before Collins made a midrange jumper. Iowa State made a three, then Maupin answered with one of her own. The Cyclones got two free throws for a 35-23 lead before the Lady Raiders went on a 7-0 run thanks to five points from Love and another jumper from Collins. The Cyclones scored three of the next four points, then Maupin made a second-chance layup, grabbing her own rebound and then getting fouled on the play for an and-one. She made back-to-back free throws before Iowa State scored another layup. Love hit a wide-open triple to close the period as the Cyclones led narrowly, 40-38.
Iowa State came out of the second half scoring two 3-pointers, until Love made a layup through traffic to stop the run. Sarengbe Sanogo connected with two free throws, but the Cyclones scored six-straight points. Collins hit a jumper to make it a 10-point game, 54-44, before the media timeout. After that, Iowa State hit a three, but Jada Malone scored a long two to make it 57-46. With 3:51 left in the period, Maupin made a 3-pointer, followed by two more free throws from both her and Love. Collins added two free throws to make it 60-55, but Iowa State scored five more in the final minute for a 10-point advantage.
Iowa State recorded the first four points of the final quarter before Love converted a successful and-one opportunity for three points. However, the Cyclones went on a 10-0 run to lead by a 79-58 score with 5:49 left. Collins sparked a Texas Tech 10-0 in response with a three, getting within 11 points of the Cyclones. However, Iowa State closed out the game with the last three points to win it by an 84-70 score.
