Gerlich earns 100th win at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas – Head Coach Krista Gerlich earned her 100th win at the helm of the Lady Raiders as No. 16 Texas Tech defeated the Kansas Jayhawks, 70-65, on Tuesday evening at the United Supermarkets Arena.
Senior Bailey Maupin posted her second-straight game with 20+ points after scoring 23 with a team-high of two threes while going 9-for-10 at the free throw line. Maupin added five rebounds and two steals in the game for Texas Tech (23-3, 10-3 Big 12) as she also totaled her team-leading fifth 20+ point game and 23rd double-digit scoring game.
Senior Snudda Collins was just behind with 17 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field (.455) with a team-high of two 3-pointers. Collins recorded two assists, two steals and a team-leading two blocks against Kansas (15-11, 5-9 Big 12). Leading the way in rebounds was Denae Fritz with six while Sidney Love led the Lady Raiders with four assists.
Sarengbe Sanogo made a layup to open the scoring in the game, but the Jayhawks scored eight of the next nine points for the 8-3 lead. Jada Malone came in and made back-to-back buckets and also got a block to help give the Lady Raiders back the ball after the media timeout. After getting within a point of Kansas, the Jayhawks would respond with a 7-0 run to force a Texas Tech timeout. Collins and Jalynn Bristow made layups after that, but the Jayhawks led 17-11 after one.
The Lady Raiders were on fire to begin the second quarter, getting two-consecutive threes from Collins and Fritz to tie the game at 17-17. Maupin made a triple for the lead right before Kansas got its first points at the 5:38 mark of the period with a layup. Gemma Núñez added a free throw before the Jayhawks scored again. The Lady Raiders answered with a three from Love then two more free throws from Collins for the 26-21 advantage. Maupin connected with a couple of free throws and Kansas added a layup at the end of the quarter as Tech led by a 28-25 score.
Sanogo once again scored first in the quarter, giving Tech a 30-25 lead. Maupin added a tough layup right after to increase the Lady Raider advantage. However, the Jayhawks went on a 6-0 run to answer, cutting their deficit to one point. Maupin added a layup to stop the Kansas momentum thanks to a dish from Malone. Collins continued the run with a triple before Kansas made two free throws. Maupin and Collins scored back-to-back baskets, but the Jayhawks answered with a three to make it 41-36. Both teams traded points in the final minute and a half of the third with Tech leading by a 45-40 score.
Kansas hit a 3-pointer to open the final quarter, but Love responded with a layup. The Jayhawks made two free throws before Maupin nailed a three for a 51-45 advantage. However, Kansas would go on a 7-1 run to make it 53-52 going into the media timeout. Maupin came out of the timeout with a much-needed midrange bucket to make it a three-point game. Kansas would tie the game at 59-59 with a free throw, but Collins scored two more of her own to retake the lead. With a minute left to go, the Jayhawks connected with another free throw for a 61-60 score. But, the Lady Raiders went on a 4-0 run for a 65-60 advantage. Kansas scored a quick 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to cut the Tech lead to two. The Lady Raiders were able to keep the Jayhawks from leading with clutch free throws at the end of the game, winning it by a 70-65 score.
Up next, the Lady Raiders head to Stillwater, Okla., for a game against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
