Texas Tech moved up one spot to No. 21 in the final men's Intercollegiate Tennis Association ratings for 2011, marking the fourth straight year the Red Raiders closed out the season ranked in the ITA Top 25.
"I'm really proud of the team over the last few years and with the entire team back next season, we have an opportunity to only be better next season," said Texas Tech head coach Tim Siegel.
It marked the ninth time during the 18-year tenure of Siegel that the program has reached the NCAA Championships.
Individually, Gonzalo Escobar and Raony Carvalho were ranked No. 25 and No. 26, respectively. Escobar was 29-16 on the year, with a 16-10 mark in dual matches, including a 13-8 mark from the team's No. 1 position. Carvalho was equally impressive, going 26-4 overall and 22-1 dual matches, which included a perfect 20-0 record from the No. 2 position for the Red Raiders. In doubles, Carvalho teamed with Rafael Garcia to rank 25th nationally. The duo combined to go 13-13 on the season from the No. 1 doubles position. Escobar teamed with Vitor Manzini to earn the 41st spot on the list. From the No. 2 position in the rotation, the duo went 20-9 overall and 9-1 against ranked opponents.
"Raony and Gonzalo proved all year that they are two of the best players in the country," said Seigel. "These four players are the cornerstone of what Texas Tech tennis is about both in the classroom and on the court."
