BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After dropping the doubles point, No. 34 Texas Tech powered back to win four straight singles and upend No. 30 Indiana, 4-1, at the Indiana Tennis Center.
The win marked the 325th career win for Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel, who is in his 23rd season as head coach at Texas Tech. He is now 325-239 (57.6 percent). At Texas Tech, he trails only George Phillbrick, who won 388 games over 26 seasons on the South Plains. Phillbrick was 388-387-12 (50.1 percent).
"We played our best singles of the year today," said Siegel. "We kind of gave away the doubles today. But we came back to play with passion and tremendous fight."
The Red Raiders improved to 14-4 on the season and won their five match of a higher ranked opponent this season. In fact, Texas Tech's 14 wins are the 11th time under Siegel to win that many matches in a season and the 30th time over the last 60 seasons.
"After an emotional win on Friday, a long travel day on Saturday and to come indoors, I cannot say enough about toughness," added Siegel.
Connor Curry, a freshman from Wichita Falls, quickly evened the match, as he rolled past Chris Essick, 6-3, 6-1, to tie the match 1-1. It was Curry's third straight win at No. 6.
Suddenly, Hugo Dojas gave Texas Tech a 2-1 lead after topping the Hoosiers' Sam Monette at No. 1, 6-4, 6-4.
British freshman Alex Sendegeya picked up his team-leading 13th dual match win and improved to 15-6 on the season after dispatching Raheel Manji, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3. Sendeheya is now 8-2 at No. 3, after beginning the season at No. 4.
No. 43 Soares closed out the match with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win over Daniel Bednarczyk at No. 2.
The day started with No. 24 Dojas and Soares cruising to a 6-3 win over Bednarczyk and Monett, 6-3. But Indiana grabbed wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the point.
Texas Tech continues the road trip, as it drives north 200 miles to take on No. 36 Notre Dame (8-5) on Tuesday at the Eck Tennis Center. Texas Tech is 2-1 all-time against the Irish, but this is the first time the two teams have met in South Bend.
The Red Raiders return home to take on Louisiana-Lafayette on March 22 at 11 a.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
