Sendegeya and Thomson of Men’s Tennis Secure Finals Spot at John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic
September 24, 2016 | Men's Tennis
LAFAYETTE, La./Athens, Ga. – Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson of the Texas Tech men's tennis team picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Kentucky's William Bushamaka and Beck Pennington to earn a spot in the doubles championship Saturday at the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic on the University of Louisiana Lafayette campus.
Sendegeya and Thomson will face off against Justin Butsch and Jordan Daigle of LSU in Sunday's finals at approximately 2 p.m. CT. The match will carried live online on the Watch ESPN app.
In singles, Thomson was handed a 6-1, 6-3 defeat by Texas' Harrison Scott in the semifinals. Connor Curry tucked away a 6-2, 6-1 consolation victory versus Rafael Wagner of LSU.
"A tough match for Bjorn today in singles," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "He didn't play great tennis, and I know he was disappointed. He turned it around really well. Alex and Bjorn were able to win a great doubles match against a team from Kentucky that will do well in the SEC. It will be fun to play in front of a big crowd tomorrow that will be cheering hard for the LSU boys. The fact that it's on the Watch ESPN app is a treat, and we're hope the Red Raider fans can tune in."
At the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Georgia, Nikolas Moceanu grinded out a 7-5, 6-3 consolation triumph against Gardner Webb's Stephano Puga.
Ronit Bisht and Jolan Cailleau notched a 6-2 doubles win versus David Durham and Drew Wendel of Kennesaw State before falling to Oklahoma's Alexandru Ghilea and Spencer Papa in the Round of 16.
"We need to continue to get better at the fundamentals in doubles," Texas Tech assistant coach Jordan Szabo said. "The skills are there, but we need to get better at knowing how to use them. Nikolas bounced back well to pick up a nice win in consolation."
The Red Raiders continue action Sunday at the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic and the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia.
