Men’s Tennis Gears Up for Saint Francis/ITA All-American Championships
September 30, 2016 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders will have five singles players and one doubles team compete in pre-qualifying and qualifying at the Saint Francis/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa.
TULSA, Okla. – Ronit Bisht, Jolan Cailleau, Connor Curry, Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson of the Texas Tech men's tennis team return to the court for the prestigious Saint Francis/ITA All-American Championships at the Case Tennis Center hosted by the University of Tulsa.
Curry and Thomson start the event with prequalifying singles on Saturday, October 1st followed by Bisht, Cailleau and Sendegeya in qualifying singles along with Sendegeya and Thomson in qualifying doubles on Monday, October 3rd.
The event's main draw action begins on Thursday, October 6th. Singles quarterfinals, double finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic bid into the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollege Championships, held from November 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
"The ITA All-Americans is the toughest competition in the country," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Every program will bring their best players, and we will have to be ready for it. The goal is for us to get as many players as we can into the main draw. Hopefully, we can go out and have a good showing."
The Red Raiders have already captured four singles victories over SEC ranked opponents sparked by Thomson and Cailleau's three-set triumphs over No. 35 Jordan Daigle of LSU and No. 42 Luis Valero of Tennessee, respectively.
Bisht knocked off No. 76 Chase Perez-Blanco of Florida, and Cailleau also edged out No. 81 Walker Duncan of Georgia at last weekend's Southern Intercollegiate Championships. Curry ripped off four consecutive wins to claim the consolation draw of the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic last weekend.
Sendegeya and Thomson posted four doubles victories to come away with the title at the Cajun Tennis Classic. The duo defeated fellow Top 35 pairs from Kentucky and LSU during the semifinals and championship match.
"There is already a lot to be proud of this fall season," Masi said. "The players have a lot of internal motivation during these individual tournaments. Connor won the backdraw in Louisiana last weekend. He had a great run winning four straight matches after he lost a tough opening round match. That says a lot about him and his fight. Alex and Bjorn stepped up in doubles and proved that last year wasn't a joke. They've played some tough opponents in some tough conditions. Jolan also won three matches in Georgia last weekend. That was something to be proud of as well to start the season."
