No. 44 Men's Tennis Hits Road for Three Matches

The Red Raiders will face off with UTA and No. 9 TCU on Thursday followed by a Saturday matchup against No. 8 Texas.
ARLINGTON, Texas – The No. 44 Texas Tech men's tennis team is set to travel in-state to square off against UTA along with Big 12 rivals No. 9 TCU and No. 8 Texas over the weekend.
The Red Raiders (9-12, 0-2 Big 12) will face UTA on Thursday in Arlington with a 10 a.m. CT first serve. Following the UTA matchup, Texas Tech will go head-to-head later that day against No. 9 TCU at 5:30 p.m. CT in Fort Worth. The Red Raiders will end the three-match road swing versus No. 8 Texas on Saturday with a 3 p.m. CT first serve. Texas Tech looks to clinch two critical Big 12 wins after being handed a pair of losses to then No. 8 Oklahoma State and No. 16 Oklahoma last weekend. The Red Raiders are scheduled to face three Top 10 opponents during its last four matches to close the regular season.
"We need to be able to bounce back starting tomorrow after a tough weekend," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "We need to make sure we focus on UTA first and nothing else. After that match is when we focus on and turn our attention on TCU. The key to this three-match stretch is to take things one step at a time."
Bjorn Thomson sits at 13-1 and has come away with an ITA singles ranking of No. 85 after he dropped his first dual match decision of the season against Oklahoma's Alex Ghilea. In doubles play, Thomson and Connor Curry have climbed up to a season's best No. 12 doubles ranking. The duo has have posted a new season has posted an 11-3 mark and are 3-1 against fellow nationally ranked doubles teams.
Jolan Cailleau checks in at No. 33 in the ITA singles rankings and has pieced together four straight victories, the latest being a 6-3, 6-4 decision over then No. 27 Julian Cash of Oklahoma State. He continues to lead the Red Raiders from the No. 1 singles line.
Alex Sendegeya has secured a 12-8 singles and has anchored No. 4 spot for the Red Raiders in singles play. He has won four of his last five outings and cruised past Oklahoma's Jochen Bertsch by a 6-1, 6-3 margin in his last performance. Sendegeya has teamed with Jackson Cobb, and the pair has drummed up a 7-3 doubles record from the No. 3 spot.
UTA (14-7) is coming off a three-match winning at home and has won 12 of its 14 home decisions this season. The Mavericks captured their last win courtesy of a 7-0 sweep of UTSA on Saturday. UTA does not currently have any nationally ranked players. However, Jhonathan Gonzalez has been strong at the No. 3 position where he has dialed up victories an impressive 11-1 mark.
The Frogs (14-4, 2-0 Big 12) have won nine straight matchups and rattled of a 4-0 sweep against USF on Monday. TCU also swept both of its Big 12 matches versus Oklahoma State and Oklahoma on the road. The Frogs enter this week's action as the Big 12's lone undefeated team in league play.
TCU has four players who possess ITA singles rankings starting with Cameron Norrie at No. 3 along with Alex Rybakov at No. 21, Guillermo Nuñez at No. 86 and Jerry Lopez at No. 111. The two teams split its meetings last season. Texas Tech won a 4-3 decision at home to clinch a share of the Big 12 regular season championship, and the Frogs claimed a 4-2 matchup in the finals of the 2016 Big 12 Tournament.
The Longhorns (18-5, 1-1 Big 12) are coming off a 4-2 loss to Oklahoma State back on April 2. Texas and Baylor will play Wednesday for sole possession of third place and to move a half-match back of Oklahoma State in the Big 12 standings.
Like TCU, the Longhorns also have four players in the ITA singles rankings with Christian Sigsgaard at No. 18, Yuya Ito at No. 36, Harrison Scott at No. 49 and Leonardo Telles at No. 112. Last season, the Red Raiders turned in a 5-2 win over the Longhorns at home.
After this week's three road matches, Texas Tech has one home match remaining versus No. 3 Baylor on Saturday, April 22. First serve is on-tap for 6 p.m. CT at the McLeod Tennis Center with free admission to all home matches.
