April 13, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders face off with No. 9 TCU this evening at 5:30 p.m. CT in Fort Worth.
ARLINGTON, Texas – The No. 44 Texas Tech men's tennis team returned to the win column with a 4-0 sweep of UTA Thursday at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (10-12) dropped a combined eight games between their singles victories at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 positions. Texas Tech has won 10 of its 12 matches versus UTA (14-8), and it marked the first meeting since the 2004 season.
"I'm proud of the guys for locking in and taking care of business in the morning match," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "We played very solid. It was a great effort at No. 2 doubles coming back from down 4-1 to clinch. I'm also very happy for Pyry to earn his first dual match singles win as a Red Raider."
Texas Tech started quickly in doubles as Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson, ranked No. 12 in the nation, continued their winning ways with a 6-2 win over Mauricio Del Rio and Jhonathan Gonzalez on the No. 1 doubles line.
Facing a 4-1 deficit on court two, Texas Tech's Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura ripped off five consecutive games to snatch a 6-4 triumph over Mario Muniesa and Marcos Sanz.
When doubles action was stopped, Texas Tech's Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya were trailing 5-4 but were on-serve versus Daniel Armengol and Guanarteme Nuez at the No. 3 spot.
No. 33 Cailleau stretched his winning streak to five matches and dialed up a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Gonzalez at the top of the lineup to make it 2-0.
Sendegeya turned in a 6-1, 6-1 win against Muniesa on court three to push the Red Raiders ahead 3-0, while Pyry Hyrkkonen closed out the sweep and captured his first dual match singles triumph at 6-3, 6-0 versus Del Rio at the No. 5 slot.
Unfinished matches included Curry on the brink of victory with a 6-2, 4-2 advantage against Armengol on court four. No. 85 Thomson and DiLaura faced one-set deficits, respectively.
Texas Tech continues its three-match road swing versus No. 9 TCU with a 5:30 p.m. CT first serve later this evening. Live match updates will be available @TexasTechTennis on Twitter.
