The Red Raiders welcome No. 3 Baylor for their home finale next Saturday.
AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 44 Texas Tech men's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 8 Texas on Saturday at the Caswell Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (10-14, 0-4 Big 12) return home to finish the regular season versus No. 3 Baylor, while Texas (19-6, 2-2 Big 12) strengthened its hold on fourth place in the Big 12 standings.
Texas captured the doubles point aided by victories on courts two and three to go up 1-0.
The Longhorns started fast behind Colin Markes and Christian Sigsgaard who collected a 6-2 win over Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura in the No. 2 spot.
Texas Tech's Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson, the nation's No. 12 ranked pair, fired out a 4-0 lead of its own versus No. 67 George Goldhoff and Leo Telles at the top of the lineup. The duo clinched the 6-3 victory courtesy of a well-placed Thomson forehand winner.
The rubber match featured Texas Tech's Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya against Rodrigo Banzer and Harrison Scott of Texas in the No. 3 position. The Longhorn pair secured a 6-3 decision to clinch the doubles point.
Texas stretched the advantage to 3-0 when Banzer defeated DiLaura 7-5, 6-1 on court five followed by a 6-4, 6-2 triumph by No. 22 Sigsgaard over No. 85 Thomson in the No. 2 spot.
Curry put the Red Raiders on the board after he dispatched Telles by a 6-4, 6-2 on the No. 4 singles line.
The Longhorns closed out the 4-1 decision as No. 48 Scott outlasted No. 33 Cailleau 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in a battle of Top 50 players on court one.
When play was stopped, Sendegeya and Cobb possessed one-set leads at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
The Red Raiders conclude the regular season at home against No. 3 Baylor next Saturday. First serve is on-tap for 6 p.m. CT at the McLeod Tennis Center with free admission to all home matches. Texas Tech will honor its seniors Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura prematch.
