No. 45 Men's Tennis Faces No. 4 Baylor on Senior Day
April 21, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders will take on their fourth Top 10 opponent over a six-match span since April 7.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 45 Texas Tech men's tennis team wraps up its regular season and squares off against No. 4 Baylor on Saturday.
First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT from the McLeod Tennis Center. Admission is free with free pizza while supplies last. Live match updates are available courtesy of @TexasTechTennis on Twitter.
Texas Tech (10-14, 0-4) Big 12) will recognize Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura for Senior Night ceremonies prior to the match. The Red Raiders have registered 70 dual match wins sparked by a program single-season mark of 28 victories and the program's first Big 12 regular season championship in 2016.
Cailleau has piled up 83 overall singles wins and spent the entire 2017 season ranked inside the ITA's singles rankings. He has climbed as high as No. 25 and currently holds the No. 30 position. Cailleau was a 2016 All-Big 12 First-Team selection highlighted by a 20-win dual match campaign and is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First-Team honoree.
DiLaura has secured a combined 41 victories between singles and doubles most notably a career-high 10 singles and 11 doubles wins this season. He played a vital role on the No. 3 doubles team with Hugo Dojas late in the 2016 season where the duo clinched the opening point as part of wins over No. 18 Tulsa, No. 8 Oklahoma and No. 19 Texas.
"They're two guys that have been here for four years and meant a lot to this program," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Jolan, for his first three years being at the number four position, really added a lot of depth to those squads for Coach Siegel and for us last year. This year he's stepped into a new role for us playing number one. That's a tough feat for a lot of guys, and Jolan has handled it well. Carlos has been in and out of the lineup throughout his career but has done a great job especially in doubles the last couple of seasons. Last year, he stepped in late in the season and this year added some valuable time as well."
The Red Raiders will meet their fourth Top 10 opponents over the last six matches dating back to April 7. Texas Tech earned a trio of wins over Baylor (21-5, 2-2 Big 12) last season, all by 4-3 decisions. Prior to that, the Bears have tucked away 22 of the previous 23 matchups.
Bjorn Thomson checks in with a 13-2 singles record and is ranked No. 85 by the ITA for the second consecutive week. He will look to return to the win column after dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision to No. 22 Christian Sigsgaard of Texas last time out.
The No. 1 doubles line has been kind to Thomson and Connor Curry who have garnered a 13-4 record in dual match action. The duo is ranked No. 16 by the ITA and has tucked away a quartet of wins over ranked opponents.
Alex Sendegeya has tied Thomson for the team lead with 13 singles wins on the strength of a 5-1 mark dating back to March 24. Curry has notched a 12-7 record and earned the Red Raiders lone point with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Texas' Leo Telles last Saturday.
Baylor is coming off a 4-1 setback to Big 12 frontrunner and No. 9 TCU on Wednesday. The Bears are led by a trio of players inside the ITA singles rankings. Juan Benitez comes in at No. 13 followed by Max Tchoutakian at No. 43 and reigning Big 12 Player of the Week Johannes Schretter at No. 53. Schretter jumped 25 spots in the rankings after he knocked off No. 42 Yuya Ito of Texas by a 6-4, 1-6, 6-0 margin.
"Every year it's about belief," Masi said. "I think that's one thing we did last year is that the guys truly believed in themselves, and that's what made the difference. There wasn't much difference in last year's team and the year before that and this year's team. We don't have two of the guys in Felipe and Hugo who were starters last year, but a huge core of the team is still here. It's a matter of mind over matter. I truly believe that if our guys go out there, feel confident in what they can do in their ability and instill that in terms of a match it gives our team a good shot. They beat those teams last year, and there's no reason why they can't beat them again."
Texas Tech will head to next week's Big 12 Championships with first round action starting on Thursday. First serve is set for 10 a.m. CT with the Red Raiders opponent not known at this time.
